Friendship Flag

Friendship Flag

You'll Need

Skin toned paints, white or manilla construction paper, scissors, glue
Give child 1 piece of paper. Help him/her match skin color to paint. Paint whole piece of paper chosen color. Paint one hand and make a handprint on separate 1/4 sheet of construction paper.Print name below hand. Let both sheets dry. Cut each painted whole piece of paper into quarters, then enough strips so each child has one of every one of his/her classmates(15 children, 14 strips. 10 children, 9 strips). Child does not need own strip. Name of child should be on every strip of paper. Give each child a new piece of paper. Glue handprint (with name) in upper left-hand corner. Glue friends' strips on other 3/4 of page. Result: a friendship flag with all the names and colors of entire class. Helps show likeness and differences and teaches name recognition by child (and parents). I use this activity at the beginning of the year and the children quickly learn each others' names. Parents learn names of their child's classmates (and correct spellings!) when the project is taken home.
