Ice Cube Painting

Ice Cube Painting

You'll Need

vinyl tablecloth or other protective cover for work surface, paper, ice cubes, unsweetened drink mix (Kool-Aid) still in powder form
1. Spread tablecloth over work area. 2. Put out several sheets of plain paper. 3. Sprinkle small amounts of different colors of Kool-Aid onto the paper. 4. Give your child an ice cube and let them "paint" by sliding it over the Kool-Aid. As the cube melts the Kool-Aid paint spreads over the picture. 5. Change out ice cubes as necessary. 6. Allow each picture to dry thoroughly before displaying. Painting with ice cubes is multi-sensory: you see the colors form on the paper, you feel the texture of the Kool-Aid and the coldness of the ice, you can smell the different flavors of drink mix, and you can actually taste the paint if you like. This activity also opens up discussions about differences like hot/cold, wet/dry, and water as a solid/liquid.
