Balloon Activities/Modified Bean Bag Activities Indoor activities geared to exercise can be used as a whole lesson or as a 5 minute break. It can be used to promote balance, creativity, spatial awareness and exploration. You can decide how to use them, as the need/opportunity arises. The important thing with any movement activity indoors is to first define the space, rules and guidelines. Be sure it is clear of obstructions and everyone has enough room. If there is not enough space, perhaps have small groups take turns. It is also important to state the rules and guidelines of each activity. For example, before you even give out the balloons, let them know that they cannot touch anyone. Let them know that when you blow the whistle (or other signal) that means to put their balloons on the floor between their legs. For ECE it is best to give time to just play with the objects. Begin with some suggestions such as: How hard can you hit the balloon? ow soft . . .? How high . . ? How low . . ? How many objects can you bounce it off? How many times can you keep it in the air using your hands? your elbow? your head? Motor Sequencing/motor planning Keep the balloon in the air using your hand then foot Keep the balloon in the air alternating your right elbow then left elbow Hit the balloon in the air and clap 3 times before you catch it Hit the balloon in the air and touch your toes before you catch it Partners/Cooperation tasks Put your balloon between you and your partner's head and walk around Put your balloon between you and your partner's belly and walk around back to back/ through an obstacle course/hip to hip, etc. Now try both balloons! Music and Movement Create a tape of varied symphonic music. Have children "dance" with their balloon according to how the music makes them feel. Remind them not to touch anyone and if they do, they must sit on the side until the next game. Balance Hold your balloon in one open, flat hand and walk from one side of the room to the other without letting it fall. How fast can you go? Can you do it on your knees?, etc. Have fun!

Bus Stop Backpack Game This is a great idea to keep children busy during down times (bus stop, bus duty, bus ride home, etc.). -Find a plain, flat spot on the backpack and create a tic-tac-toe board using velcro and any inexpensive plastic toy pieces (or make your own game pieces from craft foam). Draw the tic-tac-toe board on the backpack with a permanent marker. Then, attach velcro in each square of the board. Last, attach the other side of velcro to each game piece and put them on the board. Make sure you have five of each game piece. The game pieces can be nicely stored in one of the outside pockets of the backpack. Keepsake Handprints Crayola Model Magic and favorite color of paint small bowl or plate Get a small handful of Model Magic and spread out to a little bigger than child's or adults hand, use the bowl or plate to use as a guide for the shape. You can also use this idea for a footprint. Press the hand into the model magic to make an impression in the clay. When you feel you have made an impression peel of hand and set out to dry for at least 24 hours. When Model Magic is set or hard to desire, paint the handprint or footprint in favorite color. You can also paint the outer edges of hand a different color. Let paint dry and give as a great keepsake gift.
