View Full Version : 10,000 step program-anyone interested?
Over the years, I realized I am goal oriented when it comes to exercise. If I was told I could loose weight by walking 1 mile a day, I would probably run it so I could be done with it. Well, by using a really good quality pedometer ( I bought the Omron HJ-112) they say your goal should be 10,000 steps a day for weight loss. They even have walking programs you can do in front of your tv. The pedometer I ordered, even measures aerobic activity, so its just not walking. I think with a visual goal, I will be more motivated to make it happen. I might even get on the treadmill more than once a day.
Anyone use a pedometer as a tool for weight loss? Anyone want to start a group here for checking in with their steps?

I was going to buy a pedometer as I wondered just how many steps I took in a day. I'd join a group w/ you guys to check in with steps!
Sounds interesting. The only pedometer I have is from the Special K boxes and it counts steps taking by just being picked up and set down somewhere...not a good one obviously, lol.

That was the one thing I wanted to get myself. I also have the Kellogg's one and don't feel it is very accurate.
Maybe I'll head to Wal-Mart tomorrow and pick one up. I know when I go for my two mile walk, it works out to be approx 5000 steps.
:)
Sounds great! I saw pedometers at Wal-mart yesterday and thought about getting one but there was no price anywhere. Guess I know where to pick one up. :)
Be careful which pedometer you choose. The cheap ones either don't count right or others have you measure your length of stride and will only count when you make a full stride. I ordered mine from Walmart.com because neither of our stores carries it. It is rated #1 by consumer reports.

I think we should start a step group! It would be fun to see if we can get in 10,000 a day.

This sounds like something I could do. Like Amy, I am very goal oriented. I will go and look for a pedometer tomorrow.

I'm in but I have to buy a pedometer first. I like the one you got Amy... maybe I'll go get that one. (Wal Mart?) I won't get there until next week some time though. THAT and then I have to wait until I can get my treadmill back upstairs and in the spare room that dh has yet to refinish the floor in, (He did one but we still have the other one to do) so it might be a while. I think this would be a lot of fun!

I got a pedometer for christmas last year and I loved seeing how many steps I could rack up. It really got me moving when at noon I saw I hadn't been very active. Why did I stop I wonder? I'm for it!

Sounds good, when do we start counting???
I have a pedometer that dh got on one of his business trips last year. It displays # of steps, distance travelled, calories burned, & pulse rate.
We have a few of those Special 'K things around but they are very unacuate- dk's use them as toys. ds wants to attach one to the Maggie's tail to see if it can count how many times she wags it in a day. She's a very happy puppy if tail wagging indicates anything.
Let's see if we all can get pedometers by this coming Friday. Let's use Sat. to measure what our normal activity would be (so basically, have your normal day and don't peak! LOL). We can start by logging our starting point and we can work up from there.
Sound good?

I bought mine today. The Walmart in Canada didn't have the same model that Amy recommended. I bought another one that simply counts your steps. There is a little write up about the 10,000 program too, and the conversion of steps to miles.
I put it on 3 hours ago, and and am up to over 5,000 steps already (I went on the treadmill).
I think I am going to love this program! Thanks for idea Amy :walkin:

Woke up this morning, snapped on the pedometer, walked down stairs and "sat down" a whole 30 steps LOL  they will really add up fast that way
I did eventually get moving, normal household chores, took dd to Wal-mart and $ store. Helped to shovel the driveway, made lunch for the kids just got the little ones down for a nap.
Time :2:23 PM and 3897 steps -- better get a move on.
Just for the fun of it I put on the one from the cereal box too - I like it's count better 5682. Quite a difference!
Walk on!!! :walkin: :walkin: :walkin: :walkin: :walkin:
Still no results from the heart monitor test. As soon as I get the ok from the doc though, I'll start up! :)
I've been trying to remember to wear mine all week and seomtimes it doesn't work well because of the pants I'm wearing. My gut is getting too big for my pants so the top of my jeans rolls over a bit and it won't measure my steps! (TMI- I know) I keep having to remember to adjust it to work correctly all day. Maybe as I loose weight it will work better, but I'm still going to do it. So far I'm at 3807 steps for the day! Not too good. Ds wants to go for a walk tonight so that will really help!

I haven't made it to Wal-Mart yet to pick one up. Maybe this afternoon? I did an online survey a while back for a free one, but it has yet to arrive. I'm thinking I will pick up a simple one just to get by till the other one shows up.
