For the first time she asked for a specific name brand of clothing... Ever Girls at Kohl's. Why oh why does a 6 yo have to ask for certain brands? It's just not right! The bank account is no longer safe! Where are the days that they don't have an opinion on what they wear?!!! :bawling:

My 6 yo dd is finicky about the way clothes fit/feel but not into name brands yet. Of course, we don't have any name brands in our house for her to know there is a difference!! She does love shoe shopping with my mother though!
Funny this came up today, as i was shopping with my best friend and she dragged me into Lasenza Girl. Every feminist bone in my body got broken as I walked around and was amazed at the enthusiasam of both the staff and customers as to how to sexual a six year old. This store was also a "double store" and had ladies apparel on one side so the mothers could dress like thier children. I was heart broken to see one product (as well as laughed my butt off). They were selling padded underwire bras in sizes 4 to 6X. Yes kids bras (fitting a 6-8 year old). These sexy numbers were strapless and would make very good sling shots for kids in grade 3.
What ever happened to a good pair of jeans you could run and play in, get dirty in and ride your bike for hours without worry. Don't get me started on the spagetti they call underwear!
Cheers

That's so wrong! At least dd doesn't want the "sexy" stuff.. .good thing 'cause she wouldn't get it! The Ever Girl clothes are actually really cute, it's just the whole name brand thing that threw me! Totally wasn't expecting it at this age!
I think the company that makes padded bras for 6-8 year olds should be burned to the ground!!

I always thought La Senza Girl was cute because all I saw were t-shirts and furry phones. I had no idea they sold such a thing. I agree, burn 'em to the ground! I couldn't imagine anyone actually buying one??? 8o There is nothing cute about a padded bra on a child. I hope they go out of business.
Right now I'm looking at my boys, one covered in spaghetti sauce and am thrilled! rofl

 I could just image my 10 year old ds getting ahold of his big sisters bras and doing such a thing!
:)
The brand name thing doesn't throw me or upset me. We buy and they ask for specific brands names with other things with no ramifications of growing too fast....Little Tykes, Hot Wheels, Barbie, Muppets, Groovy Girls, BRATS.......ect.....why are clothes different?

Because I associate the need or want for name brand clothes with older girls, not 6 year olds. Toys are different, to me anyway.

I agree. Six year olds can tell the difference between a "real" Barbie and a dollar store "Barbie" but you don't expect them to know, or care about, the difference between Gap jeans and Target jeans.

My 6 yr old is picky when it comes to certain clothes. I bought alot of her name brand stuff at Once Upon A child and I am a huge yardsale gal :walkin: I have found so many good name brand clothes for cheap more for my baby then my daughter but I hate to pay name brand prices. I have a hard time justifying it and Meg is getting so picky that she could care less if it was Tommy or Gap. I love Target clothes. My mother in law just got some clothes for the kids from there and they we adorable.
As far as the bra thing for little girls! Give me a break, that makes my stomach turn! They are way to young and I cannot not imagine what point they are trying to sell!

Seriously, why??? is it the difference in quality they are noticing? Or the name???????
If you did a blind test...could they tell?
Not to be snarky, but don't we as parents need to take some ownership in all this. We will buy our kids name brand toys cause they might last longer, but we get really upset if they kids recognize name brands.

It's an association thing with me... a point I guess isn't getting across. To me, and this is just me, I think of clothes being more of something an older girl is concerned with, not a 6 year old. Like I said, that's just how I view it. Don't know what else I can say??!!!

Why what? Why/how can they tell the diff between a real Barbie and a dollar store one? 'Cuz the $ store ones are nasty! They do not have as pretty a face and the hair is nappy and of course.... they do not come in the prettier boxes. Easy to spot the diff.

I don't think anyone here is really upset. Just making observations that name recog. with clothes has started early at Amy's house. My dd does not notice brand names. I could bring home Gap or KMart jeans/T's and she wouldn't care or notice. I'm just agreeing that Amy's dd at this young age, it's surprising she cares what brand she's wearing. I personally never made a big deal that we bought Little Tykes or other brand name toys, we just bought what we bought. And it's the same with dd's clothes.
I guess I don't get the difference if a child asks for a Barbie, American Girl or BRATZ (can you tell i have a dd! LOL) from a store brand name of clothes. To me that is just splitting hairs. If a child is savvy enough to differentiate between toys, why would we be surprised she is noticing clothes? Heck, my kids have preferences in brands of cereal...why is that different????
It's all brand name recognition and advertising.

Exactly. Name recog. and advertising. You see ads on Sat. morning for toys and cereal aimed at kids, not clothes, because under say, 10, most kids don't care what brand of duds they have on. It may be splitting hairs to say there should not be a difference in comparing the two. But that's not the issue. The age is what the issue really is. I know when dd was 6, she could not have cared less what tag in her pants said. lol
Is this horse good 'n dead now?? :goofy:
Is this horse good 'n dead now?? :goofy:
guess so....... since you declared it!
Since I love beating *dead issues*, I think I'll ressurect this one with my opinion! :nahnah:
I see both points here. My kids are driven by what they see on tv. There is no meaning to the brand names for them. If it looks cool to them, then they will gravitate towards it. It is the same with clothes for dd. She has a certain style she likes (track pants, long sleeved shirts under t-shirts, cool looking jeans and fleece). She could careless if I get them from Wal-Mart or Gap-as long as it is the look she likes.
If a 6 year old child is recognizing brand name clothes, then I would first look to the parents to see what they have done to influence them. Most kids that distinguish designer from wal-mart, has a mother that is a name brand snob. Aren't we the main influence and model of behavior that our dd's have?

So I'm a name brand snob?!!! Or, that's your take on my personal situation?!! Couldn't be further from the truth. I don't, and have never, bought name brands, talked about name brands, etc! That's too funny!!! And that goes for everything.. .toys included. Sorry, but you're wrong in this particular situation!
And, there are many other influences in a child's life than just her mother, I'm surprised you didn't know this! Once they start school and are mingled with older girls, they are influenced by them, too. Unfortunately, gone are the days that I am the one and only influence on my daughter. There's a whole big world out there that serves to influence her, too.
This is too funny. A comment about my 6 yo wanting Ever Girl clothes has gone 'round and 'round and brought so many other issues out in the open (not my issues, other people's issues!!). I don't understand why a mom can't express that she wishes her daughter didn't request a certain brand of clothing at 6 years old! Suddenly, it's turned into finger pointing that we're all guilty of pounding brand names into our kid's heads and being name brand snobs!!! Too funny! Guess people don't really know me or anything about me at all!!!
ROFLMAO!! You are right-this IS too funny!!
We are ALL name brand snobs to some extent. It isn't a negative connotation. It is a slang marketing term used to describe people who are loyal to certain brands. It's not about the amount of money you spend on the brand, its about the loyalty. Didn't you mention once that you bought capri's in tons of colors from some catalog company? That is a brand snob. Dh will only wear Levi jeans. That is a brand snob. We all have brands that we prefer over others. Of course our kids will pick up on that. Consider you child gifted that she picked up on that sooner than most! LOL
imamama - the brand name that your dd asked for was it a name she already has clothes in? Then you should be happy that your dd is interested in how she dresses and knows what fits and feels good on. My dd#2 was very picky about what she wore when she was 6, she only wanted pants from one certain store(Northern Getaway) because she really didn't like wearing pants, but the ones from there felt good, she was very tiny and hard to fit, but they had good clothes for her. So I don't mind being loyal to a name and spending a little extra for something that fits and they wear!

I don't want to feel left out :bawling: , so can I qualify as a name brand snob because I only buy Tide and Charmin? :goofy:
I'm a brand name snob when it comes to a lot of things. Foods because of the way they taste and that's what I prefer and brands of toys and clothes because they last a lot longer!
I know dd was a lot older than 6 when she asked for a certain brand of clothes. I think it was just before we left AK (maybe 9) she asked for MUDD jeans. (Her best friend wore them all the time) She's at the age now (almost 11) where she's very aware of name brand clothes but she's also aware of the cost of these clothes. Grandma is very good at keeping my dks well dressed in these expensive clothes! My dks know very well, that I will not buy something just because of the brand name and they won't even ask me.

I was thinking about this earlier and remember when I was 7 and asked for certain jeans. It was when they started making a big deal of the color of thread in them. Orange was way out and I was dying for the light blue thread! LOL I did get them, so did my best friend.
My kids are snobs when it comes to food and so are dh and I. I have bought the cheaper brands and they can taste the difference. Some toys I buy because I know they will last and hold up better than the cheaper version. I have no problem buying a more expensive snow suit when I know the quality is superior and it will last for 3 kids instead of one for one or two seasons. But I'm also the other way and insist that some of the store brands that are supposed to be not the best are the best. I only buy certain stuff from presidents choice because it tastes/works better. I don't think there is anything wrong with it.
Um, Amy. Ds1 just got Nikes. But only for basketball. Guess I am too? LOL

OMG! Glad I had boys! I know what you mean though. I was shopping for a 6 year old neice. Looked at the MaryKate & Ashley stuff and refused to buy it because of the one being too thin. Just didn't want my neice to think that she had to be that thin.

My son turns 16 tomorrow and has never really been into any brands other than shoes. He has been wearing K Swiss but for his birthday wanted a pair of Nike Shocks. I went to get them yesterday. The shock was in the $150 price tag. I have a friend at the shoe store and managed to get them for $110 but really! Then he announced that he now wants to go shopping with me when I get his clothes. He never cared till now and always worn what I picked out.
I guess when compared to others my son is brand name delayed. LOL! At least at his age he can buy his own.

Dawn was about 15 when she started getting interested in brand names. At that time it was "Guess"... and the price for jeans were anywhere between $75.00 and $95.00. 8o It was her birthday and she wanted a pair SO bad, and now I can't believe we actually bought her a pair... I'd NEVER do that again. LOL I remember telling her that if she wanted any more she'd be paying for them out of her own pocketbook. LOL
The other two were never into brand names. As long as the clothes were comfortable, they didn't care. :) They still looked/dressed nice... just didn't pay as much for them. Now every once in a while I notice they're wearing something name brand... but not all that much.
Diane...
