View Full Version : High fever help!
Ds2 has had a fever since Wednesday evening. It's spiked now (with no meds) to 103.5 (under arm). His breathing sounds raspy and faster than usual and he was a bit drooly earlier. Our clinic is closed until 2:00, should I forget that (an hour an a half from now) and head to the ER? I've not dealt with a fever this high before! 8o
That's not really all that high in a child. Can you bring it down with meds?
LUKE WARM BATH............to get the fever down, it will work. NOT COLD, luke warm

I hear of parents running to the ER when it's 104, and 103.5 is too close to that for my comfort. What do you consider high?

my pediatrician usually does not have me run to the er unless it is 105 or higher. like the others said luke warm bath and meds. i alternate tylenol and motrin every 4 hrs. and don't allow your ds to bundle up in blankets or heavy clothes that will hold the fever in. nkids can withstand alot higher temps than us adults. I know it is very scary to let a temp get that high though. Hang in there!!!!

I agree with Renee. Long lukewarm tub baths are the best way to lower temperatures. Also, make sure to put as little on your child as possible. This allows the heat to radiate out from the body rather than being trapped underneath heavy clothing or blankets. This is much more important than many parents realize. (When I was little I remember my mom piling the blankets on us to "swet" out the temperature. LOL)
I would also recommend Tylenol type drugs... or Advil/Motrin type anti-inflammatory medicine.
Good luck...

just because they are running to the ER doesnt' mean they need to. ;)
my doc has always told me not to be scared of fever. I usually don't even medicate it till it hits 102. I would look more at the other symptoms (listless being the one that would spook me) more than the temp.

I think 103.5 is high and actually, for under the arm temps I thought you were supposed to add a degree to it....?

I sometimes alternate Motrin and Tylenol, too when it's high.
Also put a cool cloth on the forehead....more for comfort than to actually do anything about the temp. :tinysmile Hope he's feeling better soon, Pam!

yep, you add 1 degree.
ok.......i am WRONG!!!!!!!! it a high temp! LOL feel better ;)
like i said, my pedi told me to look more at symptoms than temp, so i just don't get all that worked up by them.
Okey doke! Took him to clinic, because it didn't seem like the Tylenol was bringing it down real quick and I wanted to make sure there was no ear infection and that his lungs were clear. The doc said he's probably got the "true flu" or influenza and will feel like crap through the weekend. On top of that he's got croup which should peak tonight or tomorrow night. She said a fever of 104 to call in. And to call if he was droopy even after the fever went down. Lukewarm baths, Tylenol, Motrin, etc, just like ya'll said! He's feeling/looking better now. Motrin doesn't seem to do diddly for him.... but Tylenol is great! :) I'm going to the store to stock up on Tylenol and Motrin for the weekend. Hopefully dd1 won't get it. She's supposed to leave on Wednesday with some family friends for a trip to California. If she gets sick she can't go.
Oh, wow! I messed around a while before I replied and there were a whole bunch more replies! Thanks for the support. :)

ROFL!! now now dear ;), it's just a matter of opinion and I always thought 103.5 was high - you don't have to agree with me. :goofy: I'll still like you AND I won't even give you bad reputation points! :D

that is odd bcuz i think the 'high risk' ages are infants to 5 yrs, but i did read you can get it any time. hope this is just a one-time thing for her. we were told once you get it you are more susceptible to it. :\

Thinking our changing places might be just what you all need...you know absolutely freezing cold temps to knock all those bugs out of you! So long as I don't pick any up while I'm down there this should work out just great!

We were told when one of our kids had a high fever to alternate the tylenol and motrin but you could do it every 2 hours rather than 4.

Holy crap!! :nervous: Someone would be taking me to the ER if dd had a fever that high! Isn't there like, risk of brain damage or something when it's that high?? (Ok, know it alls, this is your chance to shine.) ;)

Oh bless your hearts. I hope dd stays well (and hope more that she doesn't come down with it while she's away) and your little man feels better soon too.

Hope he's doing better. And the rest of you don't get it.
Well, ds2 actually slept a little bit last night! :D I feel goood this morning, lol! His fever has gone down somewhat and he's not such a klingon! So far, so good as for anyone else catching it. They've all been avoiding ds2 like the plague, lol! He tries to run up and hug them or cuddle them on the couch and they turn and run. You know, it's weird, I am such a homebody, but just knowing that we can't go anywhere is driving me bonkers! :crazyroll:
Hmmmm.... I remember having a temp of 108 when I was a kid... maybe that explains some things?
Ann, that's scary that it's the same class! 8o
Thanks for the well-wishes, all. I think night before last was the peak of the croup, so he should sleep like a baby tonight. :)

When mine were little would give them St. Joes Asprin, ...
you can't give kids asprin anymore for fever because it's been found to cause Reyes syndrome which can be fatal.
