I'm going to be working with dd2 and ds1 both this summer on improving their reading skills. I'd love any ideas to help them. :)

How about using magazines geared towards kids?

Take them to storytimes.
Libraries & bigger bookstores such as Barnes & Noble or Borders
will have storytimes. You can call or stop by to pick up a schedule.

My dd who is 5, loves the Dick & Jane books.
She loves the fact she can read then herself.
There are so many books out there now for early readers.
They have the age & reading level on them.

Let them pick out what they like. Good luck !

Libraries have reading programs for kids. They usually give out prizes for kids who put in enough reading time.

Use textbooks, computer programs, books-on-tape, and other materials available in stores. Games are also good choices because they let the child have fun as they work on their skills.

Have them read menus, roadside signs, game directions... weather reports, movie time listings. Establish a daily 15 to 30 minute time when everyone in the family reads together silently. Setting a good example (seeing you read) will inspire your child to read.

Provide the best conditions for reading. Let your child choose a place where they will have few interruptions. Make sure the lighting is good, that the chair they are sitting in is a good/comfortable chair. Choose a place where they won’t be distracted by the radio, TV or other noises.

Your reaction also has a great influence on how hard they will try to become good readers. Be sure to give them a lot of praise for their efforts.

Good luck... :)

I had forgotten about summer reading program. I wonder if I could do the Pizza Hut thing (Book It ?) over the summer as well? Thanks for your help! :)
