I think there was a thread on this on the old board, but I can't get to it and I need ideas. I want to do different themes for each of our boys (ages 2 & 4) when we move and I don't know what to do. I would like to stay away from something that they will outgrow in just a short time. Oldest ds wants Buzz Lightyear and it just seems like it will be a passing phase and I don't think I want to invest a lot in something like that. Oldest ds has a red bunkbed that he wants to keep, so red will somehow have to match the theme we pick for his room.

I am ready for your ideas!!! :)

This is what I just ordered for ds:
http://www.domestications.com/parent.asp?pf%5Fid=A371144Bx&dept%5Fid=9252&parentname=&featurename=

They've got a "spaced out" bedding too that I thought was cute. I might get that for my 3 year old. They've got the bed caps for bunk beds, and those are hard to find.

Does your son like firemen/trucks??? That would go well with the red bunk bed... I have NO idea about your other ds. Trucks/car's... railroad/train's??? It's really hard to come up with something that will last them more than a few years. LOL I can't tell you how many times we've changed our dd's bedrooms... besides them changing/trading rooms. LOL For a while it seemed like that's ALL we were doing was redecorating bedrooms. :) Good luck, I hope you can find something that he likes.

We used airplanes in ds's room this time. Hopefully it will carry into when he is older. I stenciled different quotes like...up, up, and away....always follow your dreams.....fly with the eagles.....

We painted ds' room a real creamy, rich, chocolatey brown. My mom said ,"auuugg", but it's really pretty and she agrees now that she's seen it. Then just used a border around the room the heigth of the light switches. The border has a rustic cabin by a mountain lake and stream with wildlife. We bought Shaker furniture in brown and hunter green. His beanie babies and other stuffed animals have given way to ceramic wildlife and he has been able to grow with the room with minimal changes.

We did a beautiful dark teal color, with bright colors all around, purple curtains, brightly covered comforter. Framed all the art in this deep purple. There is no "theme" but just lots of bold, beautiful colors (My MIL thought I was nuts too, but she loves it now). We hung lots of different things from the ceiling, mobils, puppets, chimes. Each time someone from the family goes to another country, they bring something beautiful to hang from the ceiling (three headed dragon from Prague, Fish mobile from Japan, Pinocchio puppet from Italy) it's very festive and great.

What if you do buzz posters/pics and make the rest so that it can go with the next fad. Everyone wins...

I am not real big on themes cause they seem to out grow them so quickly. For ds' room, I faux painted one wall various shades of green in sort of a geometic pattern, then carried it around in a border on the other 3 walls. The other three walls are painted a kahki beige. His comforter is a plaid of marroon, green and navy. For deocoration, we have mounted alot of his paintings, his sports' pix. He also has displayed his various collections.

Thanks everyone! You are all so creative! Sounds like there's lots of cute rooms out there! Did you gals come up with those rooms on your own or did you see pics of them somewhere? I always seem to need a vision given to me! :)

I talked to ds today and was suggesting other things we could do with his room - he kept reitterating that he wants Buzz. :tearhair: LOL! If I can't change his mind I think I will do the poster/pic idea like Jeff suggested. He does have plenty of Toy Story toys that could accessorize the room.

I just really wanted to stay away from some passing phase, but when we talked about moving this was something I told him he could pick - BIG mistake, huh? :newwink:

Thanks again!! :)

Karla...posters are easy. Paint his room a wonderful color and get some non theme bedding and then accessorize it with the Buzz stuff.

Yea, I know the posters will be easy (too easy LOL) - I just wanted to avoid going that route. stomp stomp pout pout! LOL

You can always get those wall clings. Get some neat bedding in a coordinating color and just use Buzz pillowcases. That way you will only have to get rid of the clings and cases next year. LOL

I always find great ideas in the Pottery Barn Kids catalog. Yummy!

Thanks angie! He has Buzz sheets and pillowcases, so I am thinking I can make this work for him without much invested! :yippe: I'll have to check out the Pottery Barn Kids catalog - maybe I'll find something in there for youngest ds!! Thanks again! :)

Right now our boys are doing "Star Wars" and "Pokemon/transportation" LOL! The "Pokemon/transportation" boy is also integrating a little "Buzz Lightyear", so I can relate to your dilemma. You can only imagine how crazy this room looks...and makes me feel...but hey, it's his room. Our oldest ds ("Star Wars") has the red metal bunk beds...and we worked those in by using a coordinating colored dust ruffle, and valance on the window. We used Star Wars posters...because I figured this would definately be a passing phase. His friends just love his decor! For the "Buzz" room, display his "Buzz" and "Woody" guys on a prominent shelf or dresser.

What is your younger ds interested in? My sil just redid her youngest (3 years) room in a jungle animal theme. He wanted Tarzan, so just comprimized. It turned out really cute. He older son (5) is anything that can go FAST. They painted his room black on the bottom half, red on the top and a black and white checkered boarder through the middle. Then found race car wall clings for the wall above his bed. His bedding is all black and red also. He has red bunk beds like your older son.
It took some getting use to the dark colors but looks good. He loves it. I would hate to be the one that has to paint over it when it's time for a change, but thats just me. I hate painting.

Thanks gals for all of the ideas! I love hearing about all of these rooms and options!!! I am so anxious to just have all of this planned! :)

Ryleigh - I like the jungle idea for youngest ds and that is something that would easliy grow with him for a few years. He turns two on Monday, so he's not really at an age of picking anything on his own...yet! LOL! And, I like the race car room idea too, but I agree about painting over dark colors later. Seems like a big pain.

Another idea for a 4 year old that he won't grow out of is playground balls. eg. Soccer.

Soccer: Paint room white & black. Hang soccer balls in the form of an arch from the celing.
Also, celing fans make a nice statement and they come in sports themes too. This should last him at least a few years...LOL

Thanks! I actually tried to talk him into doing hockey which he loves and he even refused that for Buzz - I couldn't believe it!! Dh coaches football and basketball, so I am sure he is relieved! LOL! Thanks for the idea.
