View Full Version : Do You Check the Forecast Before School?

Kat's response to a post yesterday made me kind of laugh, because I also find myself wishing parents would check the weather forecast before sending their kids off to school. For some of you it might not be an issue, but we can wake up and it is 5C (40F) but by 3pm it is 25 C(80sF)!!! That is quite drastic. I always watch the weather and have the kids dress in layers for that reason.
This morning we biked to school, and it was cool out, but I saw one little girl with winter boots and a wool coat!!! I also saw a little girl standing there in sandals and shorts and a skimpy little tshirt, which will be fine by this afternoon, but this morning she was frozen!
Just wondering what you guys do??
I watch the news every am, so I see the weather report, but don't make a huge point of it. Our weather can be cool in the am and warm in the afternoon too. I suggest to the kids that they might want to wear a sweater but don't insist..it just makes for more battles! Usually, they will be cold for a couple of days and then "decide" to wear a sweater! LOL

My youngest dd (16) is at the age where she doesn't care HOW cold it is... it isn't "COOL" to be caught wearing a coat/sweater or anything that might make sense. LOL At her age I pretty much leave it up to her but sometimes I'll hint about how COLD it is and a lot of times she'll go back up to her room and change into a warmer sweater/shirt. If I don't "bug" her or right out TELL her what to wear she usually does the right thing. LOL If she doesn't... then she freezes and hopefully learns a lesson. :)
As for my day care kids... a lot of them will come dressed in long pants but will usually bring a pair of shorts to change into just in case it gets hot. They usually like to layer their tops anyway so... all they have to do is take one shirt off and their all ready for play. It looks funny seeing the little kids go off to school. Some are dressed in long pants, coats/sweaters... while other's are in their shorts and short sleeved shirts. This is the kind of weather I hate trying to dress for... you just never know! LOL
Diane...
Most definitely Kathy...for the same reasons you stated. It's usually always chilly in the morning's here and so most days a light jacket or sweater is needed, but it's shed by morning recess. I always watch the weather and ds has gotten into the habit of checking too, although most days his idea of checking the weather is sticking his arm out the front door, LOL.
We've got it pretty easy here I think. Once the season changes from cold to warm I send the kids to school in pants, a short sleeved shirt and a jacket. They use the jacket in the morning on the bus then usually leave it at school because it's too warm to remember it by afternoon! Our weather is so predictable, down to the rains so I just meet them at the bus stop with an umbrella if it's pouring. Doesn't rain enough for rain gear.
usually when I take the dog out for the night, I check the night before, I ususally send a sweat jacket with ds no matter what, unless he has his winter coat....the weather is so unpredictable...like its pouring here all morning, which is supposed to be light showers...LOL..

Usually hit the remote and turn on the weather channel before I ever get out of bed in the morning. Just an excuse to stay there a few extra minutes.
dk's usually wear long pants and take shorts along just in case. Lately all dd wants to wear are tear away pants with her shorts on underneath. They both wear a t-shirt with a light sweater that they can take off if they get warm.

One morning when I was driving to work (before dks) I saw three little kids standing outside the school near our house. School was closed that day due to dangerously low wind chills. I stopped and told them school was cancelled and I offered them a ride home. They were very nervous about accepting the ride, but it would have been dangerous for them to walk back home. :( They finally got in and told me their mom was sleeping!! It about broke my heart that she didn't even get up to send them off to school, especially with the weather so bad :( I think the oldest was MAYBE in third grade.
My dks aren't in school yet, but dh is a teacher and one day this winter he went to school and couldn't figure out why no one was showing up..... um, gee honey - it was canceled!
