Dh comes home Tues. night instead of Wed. like he usually does. He's planned to take me out for valentines. Dil had called earlier to ask if I'd keep the kids another night. Of course, not knowing dh was planning to come home. What are we going to do about dinner?

Prior to dinner dh let Braeden eat every bit of chocolate in his valentine bag from daycare's party, where I'm sure he consummed even more chocolate. Needless to say he's wired. So, Dh decides to go out and bring home fahitas and all the trimmings rather than attempt a night out with two kids.

When dinner gets here, I think Braeden won't eat, he's so full of chocolate. That little munchkin ate all my rice and beans, and all dh's, then grabbed a tortilla and went in the living room. He was quite and we assummed he was watching TV so we continued to enjoy our dinner while Sissy made a mess of herself in the high chair with a biter bisquit.

Dh decides to go check on Braeden and I hear, "Boy! What have you done!"
I go in the living room and he is covered from head to toe in ashes and soot from the fire place. The bricks are covered, the rug in front of the fire place is covered, my coffee table is covered, he wiped his hands all over the TV, filled up a vase with ashes and apparently was showering in it.

Years ago, had that been one of my sons, I'd have worn him out. I just laughed and said, "You're going to need a bath!" It took 30 minutes to vacuum up the mess. Braeden had an attachment he carried around calling his vacuum cleaner and was "helping".

Maybe he can get a job as a chimney sweep.

OMG... I think you probably handled it much better than I would have too. LOL As a grandparent though... I can definitely see the humor in it. LOL :)
(I can only imagine how funny he must have looked, all full of ashes)

How sweet of your dh to arrange to be home early on Tuesday so he could celebrate Valentines day with you. Too bad he didn't let you know ahead of time though... LOL I hope you had a great time. (besides having to clean ashes... LOL )

That is too funny! My mom would have been running for the camera, think I would be too (after the shock had worn off). LOL

This is exactly why I have a wood burning fireplace that has never had a fire in it. It is brand spanking new after 6 years here.

OMG... I can't believe you've never used your fire place. :) That is one of the things that attracted us to our house when we were looking at it. We usually only use the one downstairs in the family room and have only used the one in the living room once or twice but it's SO nice and warm (homey) when there in use. :)

Oh, I had to have one, to burn candles in, lol. I actually have a set of gas logs just sitting in it right now so it looks like a fireplace, we don't have gas utilities. My kids always were getting into the one we had at the last house. I look at my neighbors house with all the soot around the fireplace and think, whew, I'm glad I don't burn mine.

Too cute! Isn't it great how much perspective you get as a grandparent compared to a parent? I would have freaked on my kids. LOL

My first thought was "get the camera". I don't know what happened, but I totally forgot to take a picture. It would have been priceless.

He is terrified of the vacuum cleaner so I would never have done that. He felt like he was helping with the free attachment hose. And I did give him a cloth to help wipe off the coffee table and the TV.

You know I did freak out over things like that with my kids, but now that I'm older and hopefully wiser, I realize that he's just curious, he found a really neat sandbox, and I was not supervising him closely. I'm always telling ds to watch him every minute because you never know what he'll get into.

You are right though grandchildren are special! They don't get away with murder, we have rules and they get disciplined, but I just don't stress any more over messes made by babies.

The room needed a good cleaning anyway. LOL

Braeden is 28 months and Haven will be 9 months on Saturday and they get more precious every day. I cannot even imagine grandparents who only get to see their grandchildren on holidays. I am truely blessed to have them be part of my every day life.

I didn't realize he and my granddaughter were so close in age. LOL I feel the same way about seeing my gd. I look forward to having her whenever I can, she's such a joy to have. We probably spoil Sarah, but she definitely doesn't get away with murder. She has rules and is expected to follow them, which she is very good about. I also don't stress about the messes she makes, which is plenty. (and I'm a neat freak LOL) My only concern is that she enjoys herself while she's at grandma/pa's house, and some day when she grows up those are the things she'll remember.

One thing I remember about going to my grandma's house is that we weren't allowed to make a mess. She had one very small box of toys, (about 12 x 12) and we knew better than to make what she considered a mess. (toys dumped around the box  ) because if we did, she'd take it all away and we'd all end up having to sit in a chair and do nothing. Not the best memories there. LOL I definitely want Sarah to have better memories than that. LOL
