View Full Version : Getting dog urine burns out of grass
My wonderful NewFounland mix is killing my yard! we never had to worry about urine burns before because we always had at least an 2 acres of land to live on. Im lucky if I have 1/8th now. What can I do to get rid of these marks? I got this product called Doggoneit-Its suppose to neutralize it, but its a hassle. Any good ideas??

I like angie r's advice about sending her over to the neighbor's yard. :) but somehow I don't think the neighbor's would appreciate that. LOL We've had this problem for years. Is your dog a female? We've tried all kinds of things that are suppose to work but doesn't. We usually just end up throwing some black dirt down on top of it and reseeding it... and even then it seems to take FOREVER to grow. We've even resorted to just going down and buying some rolls of grass and replacing it that way. I know that there is suppose to be SOMETHING that works... but we sure haven't found it. LOL I hope somebody in here has some great advice... :)
Diane...
I don't know about fixing damage that is already done, but they have products that will decrease the acidity of the urine. Talk to your vet.

I copied this from another site... It sounds like once the spots appear, there is nothing you can do but replace the grass. Ugh!!! I also read that giving your dog 1 TBLS. of Tomato Juice daily is also suppose to help decrease the acidity of the urine...
Copied...
Dog urine burns are characterized by patches of dead grass surrounded by deep-green grass. The solution to this problem is a thorough drenching of the area with water. For gasoline or oil burns, drench the soil with soapy water. In all cases, once symptoms appear, it is too late to save the grass. Replace the soil under the dead spots and patch with sod.
Here's a site that you also might be interested in...

Hope it helps... :)
Thanks Diane for the info. I was hoping there was some advice (besides the neighbor one LOL!!) that didn't involve the hassle or giving my dog pills. I actually ordered dog treats that has neutralizer in it too. I just don't like the idea of giving my dog supplements that alters the natural process of eliminating.

Amy I just bought a new product yesterday at our local nursery specifically for that. Is your dog m or f? Apparently the males are worse. Anyway, from the looks of this stuff, it is a mix of seed, fertilizer, acid neutralizer, etc. You have to thoroughly rake up the dead spots, sprinkle this stuff on, water, and hopefully something will grow, lol, and you have to keep your dog off the treated spots. Ask at your nursery, surely if we have something here there must be 10 varieties available in the US, lol. Good luck, they are a pain in the a** (the spots, not the dogs).
Mine is a male. :( This all seems like too much work for me. I'll wait until dh comes home and let him reseed.
Is he an outdoor or indoor dog? (know Neufies are huge, but are pretty lethargic so many people do keep them inside all the time.) If he is an indoor dog and only goes outside to do his duty you can leash train him to potty where you want him to. It would probably take about a week but it would be worth it to save the rest of your lawn. Take him out on a leash whenever he needs to go and always take him to the exact same spot. He'll get the hang of it and won't go anywhere else. Makes clean-up a lot easier too. No puppy packages to have to hunt for to clean up. You can also teach him to potty on command, lol! Just keep repeating whatever command word you want to use (we use "potty", someone else I know just says "drop"!) repeatedly until he does his duty and then praise and treat him profusely, immediately. A friend of ours planted a bush in the corner of the yard for the dog to go behind. Sort of like a privacy screen.

I used to listen to this guy on the radio on my way to work. www.jerrybaker.com I found some spray he sells that takes away the burn spot and stops it from turning brown again. Sounds pretty good to me. Here is the link to the product. http://www.jerrybaker.com/jerrybaker/productr.asp?pf%5Fid=2620&mscssid=UGSADG7ANNEH9M60SP473L3T6VNH72A5
ROFL!!! Look at my original post. That is the stuff I HAVE!! LOL
PamE-He is pretty darn lazy! LOL He doesn't like heat and will stay on the basement floor for 75% of the day. If there was any good spot for him to go on, I would take him there, but there is no one good spot to go. I take him for a walk every evening and he does his BM and urine in the park.
From what I see, giving him the supplements and using the dogonit spray, Im doing what I can here! :)
Max is killing the grass here too....I try to spray the hose on his urine, regularlay...LOL....still burns out the grass but not as bad....here the grass grows overnight, so its not so bad...sorry your going through this....I too have trained him to leash poop....he will only go in our certain spot....works for poop, don't know about pee.....he goes as soon as he hits the grass....LOL...

I have 3 dogs so I understand your problem. The grass may be dead right now but it will come back greener than before. Urine is high in nitrogen.
I would worry about trying to cut the acidity in the urine. Could lead to calcium stones (bladder stones, kidney stones, EEOUCH!)
If you can watch your dog urinate, you can then flood the area with water..... that should be enough so the grass doesn't burn.
We are re-sodding this fall for this vary reason. We have tall fescue and it doesn't reseed itself. Bermuda will (I hear Bermuda grass is a weed in most places... in Central California it's the easiest grass to take care of. our heat kills almost everything else) reseed itself and the burned spot should be covered in a few days.
Hope this helps
Nicole
Thanks Nicole! I rarely have a chance to watch him pee because the back door is always open. Do you really think I don't need to reseed?? I heard once its dead, its dead until you reseed. I'll have to look into that more!

I may be referring to this thread in the near future for pointers....no, we are not getting a dog. All of our neighbors let their dogs run freely, so they go to the bathroom wherever they please! :{ We have covenants in this neighborhood stating that pets are to be on leashes, but only one or two neighbors actually follow this. The dogs coming over are labs, so they are big. I am not a huge fan of big dogs and my dks are little, so I worry about them getting plowed over by a big dog. As a new neighbor I really don't want to start anything with anyone over this, but it is frustrating.
