I am so upset right now.....I just recieved an email and I am so upset. I'll post part of it....
We recently found out some unfortuntate information that you need to
know before deciding if you want to participate in the Drive. For the
past two months, up until a couple days ago, (Tristan's parents) were told by the Bone Marrow Foundation that they
would charge Them a discounted rate of $25 for each person
tested and would provide some funding for the Drive. Since they obviously did not want to charge people for being kind enough
to come to the Drive, they were planning on using money obtained from
fund raisers to cover the costs. Any costs not covered by fund raisers
were to be out-of-pocket costs to Tristan's parents.
However, a couple days ago, the Bone Marrow Foundation told
Them that they would not be charging them the discounted
rate of $25 per person but rather would be charging them the full rate
of $65 per person! In addition, the Bone Marrow Foundation said that
they would not provide any funding! Therefore, we are unable to
provide free testing like originally planned. So I am letting you all
know now that if you choose to be tested this Saturday, you will be
asked to make a $50 donation. For some of you, this donation may be
too high. Thus if you change your mind and decide not to be tested, we
completely understand and we will not be offended in any way.
Everyone involved are upset by this turn of events and lack of forth-rightedness on the part of the Bone MarrowFoundation. We completely understand that people may not be willing or able to donate the $50 to get tested. None of us likes this policy of asking people to donate nor do we even agree with it - especially since you are doing us a big favor simply by coming to the Drive and feel you should be rewarded, not forced to donate. However, if we don't ask people for a $50 donation for getting tested, Courtney and Rich would owe the Bone Marrow Foundation an estimated $65,000!! (This is AFTER exhausting all past and potential/future fund raising monies and exhausting money being set aside for any medical bills that insurance does not cover.) So there is little choice but to ask everyone who
wishes to get tested for a $50 donation.
I am so upset....I can't believe they can charge that kind of money when they are volunteering to be tested and then will also be in the registry that could possible save someone elses life...not just Tristan's.
If anybody feels the desire to help please feel free to email me.
