This morning my mother (who was a teacher for thirty-two years) went to a funeral for an ex-student of hers. The girl had tragically been his by a car while walking along a busy street.

At the service my mom went up to the girls mother and introduced herself. The mother said "Oh you were her favorite teacher!" and took her over to this display with all these photos of the girl at various times in her life. There was a picture of the girl with my mother! My mom didn't even remember the picture being taken. She was so moved, and grateful that she had touched this girls life.

So to all the teachers out there, whose jobs are so hard, and so very, very important, in so many ways I just wanted to say thank you!

I agree... a lot of times teacher's don't get enough credit for all they do and put up with. I still remember a few of my favorite teachers and even called one one day after I looked in the phone book and found her name. I had SO much fun talking to her as an adult to another adult and not as a student to her teacher.... We promised each other that we'd get together soon for a little reunion... I can hardly wait to see her again...

Amy... how nice that this student thought so much of your mom. How awful that she had to die like that. I'm sure your mom felt good knowing that she had made a difference in this girls life. What a nice compliment to her.

Amy, thank you so much for the words of encouragement. It means so much especially at this time of year when we are so worn down and stressed with all that goes on at this time of year. It's nice to hear when one of our own has made a difference. What a shame the circumstance under which your mom was made aware of her impact on this young girl.

What a nice post Amy, and so true. I am sorry to hear about the loss of the girl, how tragic, glad your Mom was able to make such a difference in her life. I still have very vivid memories of the teachers who really had an impact on me. So far my dds have been lucky and already had a couple of really special teachers.

I echo all the sentiments here. What an impact you make on our children's lives. My dd ADORES her Kindergarten teacher and she has been a true blessing in my dd's life.

What a touching story Amy! How neat that your mom touched that gal's life as she did. Recently I was thinking of some teachers who really touched my life and was thinking I should try to get in touch with them just to let them know - now I think I will. Thanks for that little push to do it. :)

Dh is a teacher and it's always nice when he gets positive feedback. Last weekend our doorbell rang and 6 of his students were standing there with a plate of "bacon and eggs" - 2 pretzel sticks with melted almond bark in the middle and a yellow m&m on top. :D They were so excited and it was cute. Another girl brought him cookies to school this week. I think for high school students this is their way of telling him they like him and had a good experience in his classroom this year. :)

To all teachers - Keep up the great work! Sometimes it seems like a thankless job, but you are making a difference and it is appreciated! :thumb:

Sometimes when you are in the midst of a really "nuts" day...with 20 little five and six year olds needing so much attention, it really does slip from your mind that you are making such an impression on them! It's funny, but as much as children remember their teachers...the teachers remember the children! Just take a look at my Christmas tree...so many ornaments from children in my past classes. It's like a little walk down memory lane each time I put up and take down the tree. I see children in our school who are now graduating from 8th grade...and they are exactly the same to me as when I had them over 8 years before in Kindergarten! They are only taller, and their voices have changed...but their mannerisms and their smiles are absolutely the same.

Thanks for the nice sentiment!

Thanks for sharing that story with us!.

I often wish I could track down (wanna help Amy/Co??) my sophomore in high school English teacher to tell her what a profound impact she made on my life!

I loved my HS English teacher. My graduating class only had 30 kids. She was my Eng. teacher 9 - 12 and also took 2 years of speech under her. She's a Jewish lady who never married. I remember she would cut the boys hair in class (those who played B-ball) she'd cut it just enough to satisfy coach who was a dear friend of hers. She also bought gifts for all the seniors every year. I still cherish the glass box with pressed daisies she gave me. I've seen her several times over the years. I've recently learned that her health is bad (diabetes is taking her eyesight and she may have to have a foot amputated. What a great lady! I even have a picture of her on a small bulletin board about my life behind my desk at school.
