I signed ds (9) up for a summer book club and I'm kind of excited about it. I really think this will give him a strong start going into 4th grade next year. There will be two groups - one for boys and one for girls. We'll meet at the library on Saturday mornings. Each week the kids choose a different book from the Bluebonnet book list. The library has them all, so hopefully we won't have to buy anything. Then they fill out a Book report which has things like list the main characters, describe the setting in two sentences, and write a five sentence summary of the story. Then they get together and talk about the book they read. Each child reads a different book, so they'll all have something different to talk about. I think there are incentives along the way like McDonalds gift certificates and stuff. I hope it works!

Sounds like a great program, Donna! Our school librarian did something similar to that during the school year with the Bluebonnet books.

MM! It sounds like a wonderful idea. We use the incentive "Child's name Day" ie. ~Mark's Day~ tohelp the boys meet the challange to read 30 books in thirty days. When you meet the challange you get to be "in charge" of the family activities for a day. The boys love it and so do we. ßß!
Love it when parent encourage reading over the summer. I passed out flyers today about the public library's summer reading program and really made a big deal over it. The kids left so excited. I just hope that alot of parents will take them and sign them up. I'm so thrilled with my class this year. Everyone of them is reading and doing so well. Even the one who left and returned at semester so far behind. With the help of grandma and the aide she too reads well now.
