I want to have ds's 9th birthday party at a glassblowing studio. The kids will get to view glassblowing demonstrations, have a drinking glass that they decorate sandblasted, and ds will have a glass casting of his hand made. Any ideas for decorations and the cake? Thanks!

Find a bakery who can use the icing gel and have them make the top of the cake look like stained glass. have a photo of ds on the cake and have them do the gel around it as a frame in stained glass with matching happy birthday ds in gel colors to match. or a hand print done in stained glass with the happy b-day ds.
Not too sure what kind of decorations you could use besides multi colored balloons but I'm sure some of the others will have some. Sounds like a fun party. :)

Wow! What a fun party! Wish we had options like that here!!!!

Love Mel's cake ideas!

I thought the same as Mel, decorate the cake like a piece of stained glass.

I wonder if there is anything like that here. I'd like MY birthday party at a place like that!

That sounds sooo neat! Where are you doing this? I didn't even know that type of thing was available for birthday parties.

Here's the place:

There's no charge for anything unless we opt to have the glass decorating and casting done. They're both a little pricey, but they haven't given me an exact figure yet - could be cheaper than I think.

Thanks for the decorating ideas - I never would have thought of stained glass! The best I could come up with was space (molten glass=sun or science with glass beakers, etc.) I know, I'm slipping in my old age! Keep the ideas coming, though. Ya'll are great!

I've got no great idea's to add, but just wanted to wish your ds a HAPPY BIRTHDAY... How old is he going to be? The glass blowing place sounds great... I wouldn't mind seeing a demonstration like that myself.

OK, now I need some help on the invitations, please!! The lady I've got working on them for me has this poem at the top: You're invited to come blow some glass, after Trey's 9th birthday you'll be head of your science class. The kids will only be watching glass blowing - not blowing it themselves (which I'm sure will be a relief to all parents concerned...and the city Fire department). I've asked her to make so many changes, I'd like to give her more of an idea of what I do want, rather than just "no that doesn't really work". Any ideas? The party is at 6:30pm on a Tuesday, so I guess I'll be feeding the kids. Like I said, they'll each get to decorate a drinking glass that will then be sandblasted. I guess that's it. I'm using the science theme, but just for the cake. I'm not planning any science activities. The decorations will be lime green, purple and black, but you really didn't need to know that, LOL. I might fill big bowls with candy (M&Ms and stuff) and give them each a test tube to fill and take home. I think I can get big ones with stoppers at the teacher's supply store.

I don't think i would say that you are invited to blow some glass and then in the next line say they aren't really doing that.
maybe something along the lines of watching and then getting to decorate..focus on the postive, what they get to do. why are you focusing on the science theme? why not more emphasis on the creative?

Right...that's why I'm asking her to change it.

We could do that. What ideas do you have?

just wanted to wish your ds a HAPPY BIRTHDAY....

Thanks! We've got a little time, though. The party is June 27th and his birthday is actually July 2nd.

How many invites are you doing?

If it were me, I'd do a stained glass invitation. Using black card stock cut shapes out of 2 pieces, lay colored tissue paper over the holes you've cut then sandwich the 2 pieces of card stock together and glue. Voila! Stained glass!

On another piece of black card stock, print the party info (possibly in silver ink) and with a hole punch, attach the stained glass and party info cards together... they could be tied with silver cord, or even ball chain (like keyring chain...) I think you can get that at the hardware store).

I'm at a loss for wording at the moment, but it'll be eating at me the rest of the day.

I like that idea with the wording Ann had. I would think he would want to help make some of the invitations, sounds fun. :)

Great idea, Jen!

Isn't there some colored transparent plastic-like paper stuff? (I'm sure with that description everyone will know exactly what I am talking about. LOL) Dks used it in some Christmas projects when they were little and it would be perfect to create a stained glass effect. (They put it btwn contact paper). I'm guessing Michaels or a craft store would have it. :)

Or what about Mosaic tiles? Not sure about the cost of those though....

Yep, that's more along the lines of what I'm thinking. She seems to have a standard format that includes a poem, though, so I was trying to work with that. Don't have to, though. I'd rather get all the details in.

Enough that I'm having them printed for me rather than doing it myself. I've still got wedding and homeymoon details to finalize.
