View Full Version : Good sources of protein?

I'm not a big meat, fish or sea food eater and dairy products seem to go over the top w/carbs.

I was able to find a low-fat, lower carb yogurt w/9g protein and grabbed some beef jerky that looked pretty good. I can stomach cottage cheese, but can't see a steady diet of these things. I like most nuts, but the fat content is scary.

For the past few days I've been able to lower my calorie intake, but have been having headaches... probably due to lower protein intake (I'm a tad hypoglycemic). If I can add protein w/o a lot of carbs or fat this diet thing just might work!

I use a mostly marinated chicken, turkey or tuna as my source of protein. I use eggs in the morning-one whole egg mixed with one egg white.

Lastly, if you don't like any of this, go to a good health store and get protein powder. You can make really good shakes my adding milk, protein powder, frozen fruit and vanilla yogurt (dh adds in whole oats for fiber) and blend it up. If I am in a rush, then I will blend it up with just some milk and be on my way.

Use a whey protein powder versus soy..better protein and easier to digest.
Plain non fat yogurt is good when mixed with fresh fruit or put into a smoothie and it's not over the top on carbs.
you might be having a headache cause you are detoxing from too many carbs and sugar. drink lots of water.

Oooooh... blech. I never thought about the detoxing part. (kind of a duh moment, eh?) I've upped my water intake to 80+ oz per day (which is probably a good 60 - 70 oz more than I'm used to! 8o ) and am slowly pushing it up to 100. That should be easier as the weather gets warmer.

I think the protein shake will be the way for me to go. Yogurt is fine, too. :)
The thought of all that meat makes me queasy! Atkins never worked for me, lol!

you don't need to eat a ton of meat. are you doing atkins? a serving of meat is about the size of your palm. beans are also good sources of protein. i make a big pot of beans with brown rice and eat that for lunch with a salad.

No, not Atkins, just watching my carbs vs. protein vs. fat balance and keeping things low cal.

Mom was encouraging me to eat more beans, too. And chickpeas. I'm such a carbaholic. :( But hey, I'll get over it!!! :D

By carbs, I assume you mean starchy carbs..cause fruits and veggies are good cards and shouldn't be limited. And 100% whole grain carbs can be good for you too.

Yeah, mainly the starchy ones. I'm just trying to be smarter about my carb choices.

Here's a recipe for a smoothie that has tons of protein in it. Hopefully this helps.
