View Full Version : Jenna Bush - too much coverage or all right?

Jenna Bush just got in trouble for trying to use someone elses ID to buy a drink. She's 19. I haven't heard a single news program that hasn't repeatedly mentioned it. The Washington Post printed an article saying we should revisit George Bush's drinking days and see if there is a genetic problem in the family or look to see if there is another problem with the family (sounded like they were implying abuse but didn't want to actually say that for libel reasons).. Another article (they just said in the Post) said that Jenna is calling out for help. Personally, I think the media is blowing this all out of proportion. She did something illegal and should have expected to get caught even if nearly everyone else does it. She should face the same legal consequences as anyone else. Since she is related to a public figure I can understand it meriting a story. What really bugs me is that the media had a hands off policy with Chelsea at the same age.

What do you think about the amount of coverage? Should children of politicians become public property even if they stay out of the limelight otherwise? Do you think this should be a reflection of the parent?

I think a lot of it came up because Bush and so many members of the party took to pointing out the shortcomings of every democrat, and it's a little comeuppance.

Big, deal, she's a kid, she screwed up.

As to the Chelsea reference, that all came about when SNL was mocking her for being unattractive. She hadn't done anything newsworthy. When her dance class did a recital, there were pictures in the news, and such. I think they just laid down the law as to using her for political fodder.

A lot of kids her age do the same thing all the time and none of them are in the news. Just because her dad is president the media is making a big deal about it. I think they (the media) need to find something a little more intresting to focus on!

I think you must accept the fact that you're fair game when your father is the President and if you do something you shouldn't do, you'll be all over the news for it. I think that is why most politicians make running for office a "family" decision.

p.s. Amy is visiting Coulie in California.

LOL! Didn't know she had a fear! Must have missed that thread!

p.s. Since this thread is already off topic, I've been meaning to ask you what QM stands for--I keep thinking it stands for Queen Mum, but somehow I don't think that's right! LOL!

Amy and I were in chat one night (with some others) and Coulie came in. Amy mentioned that she was going to be in California soon and they should get together. Coulie said that she could never meet a stranger off the internet...that's why this suprised me.

Well, I guess she changed her mind! LOL!

Hi gang...it's me Coulie...or is it?

It could be Amy...no...it could be Coulie.. who the heck is Coulie?
She doesn't even have anything in her profile. Is she afraid?

HMMMMMM???????

Coulie

Okay, I'm sitting three inches away from the Coulie. Damn, you gals are FAST! We were going to answer a bunch of posts, but I got one out, then went away and y'all are all over it!
So, here's the dish; she looks just like Meg Ryan. No, not just a little resemblence, but we were in a coffee shop, and folks were like, staring and pointing! Cracks me up! She said it happens all the time.
I kinda thought she might be freakish, sorry Coul, but she's really quite normal. I feel like I've known her forever.
Amy

I am sitting three inces from Amy and she looks like Liz Taylor in her glory years. Black hair with a striking grey streak along the front. I think she is not so screwed up as poor ol Liz though. We did meet and, as you mentioned AnnW, I did figure out how to handle this whole thing. Maybe we will make it to Oprah one day with our story. I pick Mickey to come with us.

Actually, Amy, with Chelsea it was the request the entire time from when he began campaigning straight through Monicagate and when she went away to college as well. Maybe even earlier.

Interesting you should bring up Democrats and accuse Republicans of doing this. I am accusing the media of having a double standard when it comes to the families of politicians. Jenna isn't being treated the same as Chelsea or Al Gore III. Even at the same age. Do you honestly think Jenna and Barbara are going to escape SNL? Which instances of the media or Republicans attacking the Democrat's children are you speaking of?

Did you know that Al Gore III was kicked out of his prep school for smoking pot at a school dance? VP AL Gore requested the media leave him alone and they did. Did you realize that Al Gore III was caught speeding? He was driving at 97 miles an hour in a 55 zone. He received a $125 dollar fine and I think a suspended license. That just happened last November when he was 18. Did you realize that Chelsea was smoking cigarettes underage in a bar? How about that she told her friend her Secret service body guards were *Personal trained pigs* in front of the agents. After the friend left the agent chided her and said he would be willing to give his life for her and her father probably would want her to stop saying that. She said *I don't think so. That's what my parents call you*. Excluding the part about the secret service I had never heard any of this before today. It took alot of research to get second sources on this info as well. The press (and Republicans) just didn't make a big deal about this stuff for those White House kids.

Not only didn't this stuff receive a fraction of the attention as Jenna but their parents were never ever at all blasted in the press. The press never said we should re-examine Al Gore's earlier drug use. They never said it may have a genetic link or be a problem with the family.

Again - I am accusing the media of having a double standard when it comes to the families of politicians.

Like AnnW, I find the circumstances a little odd. Who makes a 911 call to report that a 19 year old tried buying a drink with someone elses ID and was denied? I was a bartender (granted it was over 15 yrs ago!). We wouldn't have called 911 just denied them service. Since this is all alleged right now I would like to find out all the facts. Including this 911 tape. I know that at least in OR you can't air 911 tapes anymore. That may be national.
