Yep, this is the same ds who is petrified of the bath tub. We took him for a haircut today and I couldn't even sit in the chair with him. He screams and bucks. We have tried bribing with treats, holding him, letting him squirt the water bottle, etc. So, he came home with no haircut. :tearhair: Do I give up and try to do it myself at home? It would look horrendous and he would scream, but at least dh could try to help me and we wouldn't have people staring and thinking we were horrible??? I am sure this is just another one of his phases, but if anyone has any advice (or even just wants to tell me they have been thru this, too LOL) I would be forever grateful!! :D

I have always cut sammy's (2) hair he doesn't always sit still but I usually try to cut quick and just give him a basic trim around the edges where it's too long.

I used to do hair and saying the word "cut" to a child is a no-no. They assume a hair cut will hurt--after all a cut on his hand or foot does.
Also, if he's afraid of water, could they cut it dry? It's not as clean of a cut, but it's better than nothing.
I used to tell the kids, "Looks like it's going to rain!" before I sprayed the air above their heads. I'd also let the kids hold the bottle for me and I'd jokingly say, "Whatever you do, don't squirt me!" and of course they'd squirt me and I'd be all surprised and they'd giggle. I'd also make my jaw hair clamps "talk" to them and they usually answered back. Then I'd let them play with the clamps.
Not sure any of this would work since he's already had a bad salon experience. I would always recommend that moms bring their kids in a few times with them just to just watch and observe and become comfortable there before actually attempting to cut their hair.
If that doesn't sound like an option, you could try the above suggestions and trim around the edges for now. A flailing kid and pointy scissors isn't a good combo. What if you let him fall asleep and cut his hair while daddy's holding him?

My kids have never been too scared of hair cuts but I do remember holding them.
One time though I remember ds #2 fell asleep on the way to get his hair cut and remained asleep. So I held him, sleeping, and she was able to cut his hair. Any chance you could get it cut while he's napping? LOL
We buzz our boys' hair now and they think it's cool.
Sorry I'm not of more help.
Good Luck!!

Thanks gals! Dh and I have said we are going to have to cut his hair while he is sleeping....One time I tried it and he woke up instantly - like he had some power to know scissors were in the room and approaching his head! LOL! I try not to say "cut" to him and doesn't seem to make a difference. We have him watch older ds and dh get their haircuts and it makes no difference. The gal lets him play with anything - yesterday nothing worked. :( One time dh got soaked with the water bottle by ds, but even that doesn't work anymore. :tearhair: I guess we'll just let it grow out and put ponytails in it! :newwink: Thanks again!
Mickey - any chance of you coming here and doing it for us? :newwink: ROFL!

Hmmmm...how far are you from Minneapolis? I could arrange a layover there next time I fly to Pittsbrugh! ;) LOL! However, that will be in August--I think you'll be in the ponytails stage by then!
Bless your heart. Oldest ds was never a problem. My dad took him for his first haircut at an "old time" barber shop that has since closed. Someone from the newspaper was there that day and took his picture and wrote a little article for the paper about first haircuts. It is one of my most treasured photos. Youngest was not so well behaved. Luckily a friend told me about a wonderful woman who could cut hair on the run. I was amazed but she actually gave him a good hair cut and believe me he was not still. After a couple times we didn't have any more trouble. I tried the cutting hair while he was asleep thing, he always knew I was there with scissors.
Good luck.

We got out a clipper this weekend just to trim above his ears and even that had him screaming! :tearhair: I feel so bad for him, but one of these days dh will just have to hold him so I can get a little hair cut off. Can't wait for him to outgrow this stage! ;) Thanks kat! Glad to hear I'm not the only one! :)

my ds went thrugh this stage a couple of years back. finally dh couldn't take it anymore. He told ds that it was "boys day" and they were going to the Go-Kart track. He called ahead and talked to the manager and explained the problem. So when they got there the manager was waiting for them and said to ds."I see you came to ride my go-karts today" ds nodded yes. he was very excited. The manager just shook his head and said. "I'm glad you're here but we've got one problem. You have too much hair, my helmets won't fit on your head" Ds started to cry. The manager told him " I have an idea. Why don't you run over to the mall to KlassyKids and get your hair trimmed. Not a whole lot. Just enough so that my helmets will fit. Then come back and I will let you pick out the car you want.
Ds couldn't get to the mall fast enough. He hasn't had a problem since.

Hey~~ whatever works!!!LOL
Speaking of haircuts, I think that's where I should be heading this weekend. I've been so busy I've sort of been putting it off, but at the rate my hair grows, I need a good trim at least, every 3 to 4 weeks just to keep from looking like some sort of wild beast. dd needs a trim too so will just make a day of it. dh will be home by then to entertain ds.
