If you have them, do you use them? And do you really like them? I'm 41 years old and I don't think I've ever eaten in anyone's home where they use them, but I really like the look of them.

Don't have them...but I do like the way they look. And I've been at a restaurant where they were used...but never someone's home. Do people register for them now (bridal registry??)? Unfortunately (or fortunately) we do not have really "fancy" dinner parties.

Vea, the are oversized plates (usually silver or gold) that you put your dinner plate on top of.

They're just a decorative plate that goes under the dinner plate.

What were they made of? The ones I like are made of the same stoneware as the rest of the dishes, but I've seen metal and wood, too.

It actually seems to me that people aren't registering for tableware at all anymore.

Unfortunately (or fortunately) we do not have really "fancy" dinner parties.

We're not really that fancy, but the dishes we've got are a combination of what was left over from previous marraiges, which is now starting to bother me.

I thought that the point of the charger was that it was a heated metal plate that kept your food warm while you were eating? I've used the cheap kind for a decorative place setting.

probably was originally, but they are also called service plates, so i am not sure. I don't think I have ever seen anyone heat a charger, even in fancy restaurants.

i have seen some really cool colored glass ones. friend of mine has white plates, but a bunch of different colored chargers. a goldish/bronzish for fall/thanksgiving, a bright yellow for Easter, red and green for Christmas. Her table always looks so pretty.

You'd probably need a warning label, or signed liability waiver these days. Warning, this metal plate is HOT, and will fry your arm off if touched.

My old everyday was white. I wish I had done white china when we got married. Donna, my dad and his wife had the same dish issue and got a really pretty set of white/off white nice everyday dishes. She of course, has no issue with using my mother's Waterford, Sterling silver and fine china.

This is what I want:

I could do the white dinner plate and the cappuccino charger...then I could change out the charger for the holidays. They have some dishes similar to this at World Market, I think its called. I might go look at those again. Juliska is pretty pricey.

 The decent dishes we have were my dh's grandmother's or Aunt's, which is why he has them now. It just bothers me a little bit that he and his ex wife used them. But they mean something to him so I wouldn't want to just get rid of them.

Those are gorgeous!!!!
I totally get wanting to have your own couple plates. I just get tickled and annoyed that she went on and on and on about having to use a dead woman's everyday plates, but has no problem using that same dead woman's formal place settings!

My old ones were solid white but my new ones are white with a border of fruits and I could pull out several colors. What a great idea!

That sounds so beautiful! We have a gorgeous dining room suite, however, we don't have a formal dining room so I can't "decorate" the table as we use it for every meal. Do chargers come in paper? rofl!!!!!!!!!!

That's too funny.

One of my sils have several different colour sets also. Her table always looks really great. We never do anything too fancy so would be unpractical for me.... just another dish to wash.

I have silver ones, they go perfect with my china, which has a silver trim around each plate. They do make the table really elegant, I used them for Christmas dinner only? Not sure why only then....

I don't own the dishware for that sort of thing. I do have beautiful Christmas dishes that my MIL gave to dd#2. I loaned them to my mom last year, the first year we had them, to decorate her home for a decorators Christmas showcase her house was part of. So I'm sure I'll use those this Christmas.

Did our fathers re marry the same woman? I swear my step monster won't let me have my mothers silver because she uses it....it matches my china for heavens sake...argh....don't get me started.

I'm sorry but I think that would really bother me, but that might be just me. When my MIL passed away we took everything before dear FIL could give them away. He gave just about everything else she owned away before we got to it... :tearhair: idiot!!

I very seldom ever entertain... so I probably will never buy/own any of these plates. Other than decorating the table... they really don't serve any real purpose. They do look awfully pretty though. (I've seen them on HGTV)

his thinking is that these are his things too..they WERE gifts to the both of them. he loves entertaining probably more than my mother and most definitely the new wife. I can see his point. I just don't see hers.

I understand that they are his things too... which I'm sure you wouldn't mind HIM using them for entertaining... but now that she's in the picture using (even touching) them would really bother me. God help her if she ever broke one. It would have been nice if your dad would have given them to you, then maybe they could have gone out and picked out something together. I guess if I were me, I'd feel kind of funny/weird using her dishes anyway.
