View Full Version : How many is too many?
After finally getting my closet cleaned and put back together, I discovered that I have 47 pairs of shoes. Dh was appauled. What can I say, I love shoes. I remember growing up, my mom said you only needed 2 pair (one black and one white). She went on to tell us that was twice as many pair as she owned as a child. They got new shoes in Sept. for school, then outgrew them by summer when they went barefoot.

You're a brave woman  I don't know that I dare count mine! Actually I don't have that many, but I do have a closet full, too. I couldn't imagine only having two pair! My fav are sandals - I could buy at least a couple new pairs every summer - of course dh just doesn't get it! :newwink:
YOU CAN NEVER HAVE ENOUGH SHOES.... IMHO...LOL....I think shoes can totally change your moods...dh has alot too....its a little pick me up in the summer to wear the cutest sandles, and slides....my personal fav...are slides.....I would never count my either....just tossed some though, guess I get to buy more...

I am totally NOT a shoe person. I just hate buying shoes, and tend to buy very simple, plain shoes that will go with everything. I've got black flats, white flats, tan flats, and blue flats. Not big into heels. Of course I have a pair of sandals for Summer, and a pair of real casual shoes (brown, with ties) to wear with dress pants or jeans. Tennis shoes completes the collection. It's sad, huh??? LOL Good thing I have boys who, so far, don't care about shoes either.
I am NOT a shoe person either! I have 2 pairs of tennis shoes (one pair is dirty and I use those for hiking, fishing, yardwork), 2 pairs of sandals (both whilte and several years old) a pair of black hiking type boots and a pair of slide on things that I just slip on if I need to take the trash out or get the mail! If for some reason I needed to get dressed up I'd need to go shopping for some clothes and shoes! I'm a jeans and t-shirt girl!

I hate buying shoes. I always think that I could spend that money on a cute skirt instead. LOL I have to admit thoughk, that lately I have been eyeing up several pairs but still haven't bought any. I love the new styles and colors that are out, the little slides with the tiny heals that would go with any skirt out there. lol I don't own many pairs, at least not into the forties yet, but about 10-15 pairs. Most I never wear, I stick to my beige slides or my black sandals.

I'm definitely NOT a shoe person either. I've got two pairs of tennis shoes. One pair is for working out in the yard and the other pair for walking/every day use. Absolutely NO heels for me either. I have a pair of navy flats, black flats, and a pair of white flats. I also have a pair of Penny Loafers... and that's it. I couldn't IMAGINE owning that many pairs of shoes nor would I know where to PUT all of them if I had them. LOL :)
Diane...
No such thing as too many pairs of shoes! Heck, I must have 10 different pairs of black shoes alone..it depends on the occasion/outfit. Black casual flats, black dressy flats, black pumps, black dressy sandals, black mules, black dressy pumps.....I love shoes..the can make or break the outfit imho!

I don't think of myself as a person who has a lot of shoes. I just counted and I have 20 pair. Now, how many shoes do your kids have? Mine have the most they've ever had - about 4 pair each. Two pair of tennis shoes, a pair of sandals for when we go to the pool and church shoes (but oldest ds doesn't have any church shoes right now and youngest ds only has one pair of tennis shoes).

Please explain this concept to my dh. He just doesn't get it. I have also been guilty of buying a cute pair of shoes, then having to buy an outfit to go with it.

I have boys, thankfully, who are not that into shoes. Oldest has moved out so I'm not really sure. His collection is growing though, especially dress and casual dress, since his feet have quit growing (at size 13). Youngest whose feet are still growing has 5 pair that fit: dress, boots, sandals, and 2 pair of tennis shoes (light pair and dark pair).
I threw a bunch of shoes away last year (they were really outdated), but when your feet quit growing, there's no need to throw away. That really is the biggest reason I have so many. It's funny I gained a half size with each of my kids. Now that I've lost weight I've also lost a half size in shoes. Now some of the shoes that were uncomfortable before, I can now wear again. Or that's a good excuse to go buy more.

Defenitely a shoe gal here, I love them, and bags too. Since we have 4 very distinct season here, I have to be prepared for anything right?? (that's my story and I'm sticking to it, lol!).
Waaaaaay back before kids, I used to travel to the orient twice a year as part of my job. There was a fabulous shoe designer from Paris named Tokio Kumagai. His shoes were $300 a pair! Shameful! I still have the 4 pairs I bought. Now I think to myself "do you know how far that money would've gone in groceries???" lol!

I LOVE shoes, but haven't bought too many lately. I have an old pair of brown tie shoes, 2 pair of sandals (one dressier than the other), one pair of brown buckle type shoes, black flats, and white flats that are all but too small. I think I have a pair of boot-like lace up shoes too. Gee, guess I have more than I thought I did!
As for my kids.. The kids each have a pair of sandals for summer (except dd#1 has about 3 pair -one from last year, play ones for this year, and brown buckle up ones she got as a hand me down from a cousin). The girls each have a pair of clogs and cowboy (um.. excuse me..)GIRL boots, and a pair of tennis shoes.
The boys each have a pair of tennis shoes and cowboy boots. The older boys have old tennis shoes for playing at home.
All the kids have some sort of snow boots or 'mud' boots too.
I have to say that you can't have too many shoes. I may not always fit into my favorite dress, but a new pair of cute shoes is always fun, because my feet stay the same.:)

I'm with you, Ann - you can NEVER have TOO MANY shoes!! And, I've also had the same theory about the black shoes.... my dh just doesn't get it. But, he humors me and just grins and shakes his head. :D
It always does something for me when I buy a new pair of shoes - unfortunately, my feet are growing!!! ugh!! 8o
I don't know if it's a weight thing, or because of the years I spent working retail, being on my feet.
I'll be wearing the shoeboxes before long!! :biglaugh:
But this year, my absoulte fave shoes are the slides or mules!! I luv 'em, luv 'em, luv 'em!! They are soooo cute and so easy to just slip on. (of course, I've also been known to slip OUT of them - how embarrassing!)

My feet grew almost a 1/2 size with each pregnancy...and never "shrunk" back to the cute size 8 1/2's they used to be! :(

How many are too many? Let me see... assuming, like me, everyone here has two feet I would say if you have any of the following combination you have too many. 3, 5,7,9,11,13,15, etc. always an odd shoe out. Now as for 'pairs of shoes' I likely have to many. See my shoe collection and I could put most women to shame. LOL Half I have never even worn.

Even dd heads to the shoe department now when we go shopping!
Does anyone wear those flat sandles that have the elastic straps all over....they come in great colours....they look comfy and I want to buy a pair. Just wondering how they actually feel after awhile!
