View Full Version : How much for hair cuts?

Dh and I went and got our hair cut last week and walked out of there spending $40.00 between us. Dh's cut was "only" $17.00 and mine was $23.00. She own's a place in a nearby community, but she also works out of her home, which is where dh and I go. We've known Barb for years and years... when she first started in the business and worked for someone else. She does a great job... but nothing anyone else (cheaper) probably couldn't do. We've been going to her for so long we don't feel "right" going somewhere else. Dh has her/her other business insured and has been her agent for years and years also.
Anyway... just wondering what you pay to get your hair cut? Do they charge more for your hair than they would dh's or your child/ren's hair? Dd goes to Great Clips and only pay's $12.00. :) Just curious... Thanks!!
Most places I know charge different rates for men/women and children's haircuts. Usually women have more involved/intricate haircuts that take more time and/or skill.
I have gone all over the map price wise. I have paid $80 for a haircut and I have paid $10. For a while, I my thought was 'the $80 cut doesn't look any better than th $10 cut' but after a while it did. I have found a gal now that costs $50, it kills me to pay that every time I go, but my hair looks fantastic. It was kind of funny how I found her. For about 3 months, every time someone came into the store and I complimented them on their haircut, it was by this gal. I finally had to check her out. She just doesn't lift the hair up to cut in layers, she looks at how it lays on my head and goes from there. I get alot of texturizing in my hair and that takes talent. She is going to Scotland for 3 months and possibly moving there and I am about to die!

Yikes! Moving to Scotland...
I agree with Ann, a cheaper cut is a cheaper cut and it'll show as it grows out - at least it does with my short hair.
I pay $28 for my cut I think. By the time I add tip, I usually have spent $35 when I get a cut. We used to pay for dd according to her age: age 5, $5, etc. until she hit age 10, then it's a flat $12 for her. Dh goes to Hair Cuttery and gets a great cut everytime for like, $7 or $12.

depends on my mood...I usually try the cheaper places....I refuse to pay more then $20...I know I'm cheap...just can't justify it. I found a guy at this cost cutters that did a great job...I'm gonna see about going back this weekend.
I'm so lazy about haircuts....most the time I'll trim my bangs my self....or have my sister cut it when I go home.
I only ever get cuts when I'm getting hi/lo-lights (which is about every 3.5-4 months), so I have no clue what a cut costs where I go. I know that it costs me $96 before my tip (my SIL is my hairdresser and she works in a high-end salon). I think she gives me a little discount, but I can't be sure. I would be willing to pay $40 for a good cut. Like Ann's, my hairdresser knows how my hair grows and pays attention to than when she's styling/cutting it.

Same for me.
If she's a customer of your dh's, I'd think she'd have to charge an awful lot to justify changing.

   Wow... after hearing how much you all pay for haircuts I'm feeling awfully cheap. :biglaugh: Maybe it's because dh and I usually go together and it's costing us all at once, but you're all paying more for one than we are for two... so I guess I won't complain. LOL I thought because both of us have short hair and it doesn't take that much time to cut, plus the fact that she works out of her home and doesn't have to share her profits with anyone else... no overhead, she wouldn't charge as much. I don't know what she charges from her shop... I should check that out. :)
dh pays $20.00
ds its usually $15.00
I pay alot but ususally get a cut and color....$75.00 WORTH EVERYPENNY!

I actually drive to my hometown and get a cut/style and hi-lights for $50! Here I think any colors start at $65, so it's well worth my time to drive over, plus my mom will watch dd. :) I also love the gal who cuts my hair and I trust her 100% with her suggestions and ideas.
I don't know what it cost for a cut either. I was paying $40.00 for a color and cut, but my hairdresser has gone back to college and has now quit to focus entirely on school. I tried a new girl last time and she charged $60.00 for the cut and foil. Liked the new color, but I tried a new cut too and I can't seem to get it right. Don't know what I'll do next time. Then I have to find yet another new gal when I move. Unless of course I use that as an excuse to come back every 8 weeks.
Dh and ds only pay $10.00

I beg to differ. I worked for years at very expensive salons and could do NOTHING wrong--it was always "perfect!" "just what I wanted!", etc. And I worked at Supercuts giving $6 haircuts to people who complained (it's too long on the sides, my bangs need to be shorter, etc.). I truly believe people EXPECT what they pay for subconsciously, if not consciously. People think that when they pay $6 for a hair cut, it's a $6 hair cut and therefore crappy. And the same for expensive ones--they just expect them to be better. Believe me, I've worked with people in the expensive salons who did CRAPPY hair cuts (I actually had a few by them), but they were booked solid giving their crappy, expensive cuts all day. I was giving the same $35 hair cut I gave at the expensive salons (maybe even better ones since I had so much experience by then) at Supercuts for $6, but they were received very differently.

I agree...
most of the best cuts I ever got came from Supercut or First Choice. I went to the expensive salons a few time and came out disappointed most of the time. Right now I have it made. dh's neice is a hairdresser and will come to the house and do everyones hair for 'free'. We always make her take something though.... we have a lot of heads of hair for her to trim .

WOW really, Your lucky then because I have never walked out satisfied with a Supercut hair cut, not me nor dh, ds, or dd....guess it depends on the person working there...

I've never even heard of these places. LOL
Like I said, I have had both good and bad in cheap and expensive salons, but i have found the consistancy of quality has (unfortunately, cause i would much rather pay less) at the higher cost places. I still prefer to go by word of mouth recommendations rather than price.
When I graduated from Beauty school (no Laughing, I am licensed Manicurist in the state of California, since 1988.) All the fresh hairdressers would go to work for either J C Penny salon or Supercuts.....beacause they didn't have the experience to work in other salons....
Diane you don't have Lemon Tree hair cutters, Great Clips?

There were definitely a lot of new stylists and a lot people coming and going at Supercuts, but there were a few who knew what they were doing and had been licensed for years.
I agree with what Ann said...you can find good cuts at cheap places and bad cuts at expensive places and getting referrals is the best way to go (I always ask people with great highlights where they go).
