View Full Version : Tap, tap, tapping on my window
Something strange happened to me today. I went to school today to pick up my last 3 checks, then to the bank. I kept out quite a bit of cash because dh and I were going shopping after dinner. I just threw it on the seat beside me as I left the drive up. My car doors automatically lock thank goodness. Anyway, I'm headed home and am stopped at a red light. Very busy intersection. I'm first at the light, traffic in both turning lanes on either side of me as well as in the other 3 directions. There is an 18 wheeler behind me. I'm just vaguely aware of all of this and looking off to the right because I know the wait will be a couple of minutes since the light had just turned. I'm startled by someone tapping on the drivers side window. In traffic there is this man at my window and he wants me to roll down my window. I look in all my mirrors, my heart racing: that money is on the seat, yet I know my doors are locked, I don't see anyone on the other side of the explorer. This guy then gives me the "roll your window down" sign. I just barely open it an inch when he throws his hands up and leaves. He gets in the tractor trailer behind me. I just keep checking all my windows for someone else to come up and wait for the light to change. I don't know if he was having trouble or wanted directions (major interstate repair so alot of tractor trailer traffic is being re-routed through town). He stays right behind me. When I turn north to go home, I expect him to continue east toward the interstate where he can get back on, but he turns in behind me. Since this is a scenic highway and less traveled by big rigs I really get nervous. I reach for the phone and call the police, I slow down to get his liscense number off the front of his truck and make sure he knows I'm on the phone. Then I give it the gas and head home. He backs off and I leave him. I manage to get home and the garage closed before he goes past the house.
It was probably innocent, but it scared the pants off me. What was he even thinking to ask a woman alone in the middle of traffic to roll down her window for any reason.

It was very smart of you not to roll down your window kat. Better safe than sorry. If he needed directions or something he could have just gotten on his cb for them.
What did the police say/do?

Those automatic door locks are a lifesaver... thank goodness that you had them! You were right in not rolling your window down... I agree with angie that if he needed directions or anything else, he could have gotten on his CB. Is there any way that he could have seen that you came from the bank and had cash in your car? I'm glad you made it safely home... and without him seeing where you live. :)
Diane...
Oh WOW!!! He could have shouted through the window if he needed to. Thank goodness you had the cell phone!!!

Oh WOW! how scary!
If the guy was after the money or something though, he doesn't appear too bright to be trying something with so many people around and in a position where he couldn't just drive away in a hurry.
Really scary that he followed you though!!
Let us know if you ever hear anything more about him.

How scary!
Any word from the police....did they follow up on your report?
Glad you are safe and sound!
:)
An afterthought......check the back of your car....maybe something was wrong and he was trying to let you know. I know that I followed a truck once that had no tail lights (it was getting dark) just to let her know. Maybe that was what he was doing???

You did the right thing in not opening your window. It is sad that it has come to a point that we can't trust anyone anymore, but its always better to be cautious.

I would have been flipping out! I agree, you handled it well, good thing you had a phone with you. I rarely lock the doors when I'm driving and the windows are usually open, good reminder lesson.
wow Kat, how scary, glad you didn't roll it down....some people get so out of sorts they forget themselves, I agree if he needed directions he could have used his cb, I have one in my van and use it alot for infor on traffic and sometimes direction, its saved me twice in an ice storm... and when I talk to the truckers on long drives they always tell me not to stop for anyone and never get out of the car or roll the windows down...and thats coming from other truckers....I am glad your alright...
