It is really raining..not flooding on my street yet, but all around us is! The NBC channel here barely showed the NBA final game tonite because of the weather reports...areas that don't ususally flood are flooding. They are having flooding from the coastal area (45 miles south of Houston) all the way to 45 miles NORTH of here!!! We have so many rivers and bayous through here that are already saturated that they are coming over the banks.

We are still dry on my block, but the freeway is closed a mile from here! My cousin went to pick up her daughter at camp 45 miles north of here (where it was hit the hardest) yesterday at 5, couldn't get there and didn't get home till 6:00 this MORNING!!! Alot of the freeways are closed here. It's started raining again. And the National Guard has been called in and we have been declared a disaster area. I am watching the pictures on the news and I don't even recognize my town!!!

Oh AnnW! I hope it stays away from your street! Do you have a rowboat handy?

AnnW

Think I should get one, Angie!! LOL They showed on the news some dumb family with a BABY loading up in a kiddie pool trying to float down the street! DD is having a ball playing out in the rain and puddles.
They closed both of the airports, and the party we were supposed to go to tonite got cancelled cause the caterer cancelled! LOL
This is just amazing, I am born and raised here, and been through tons of hurricanes and have never seen anything like this.

Nature never ceases to amaze me. I hope you guys stay safe and the water stays away from you. We had flooding in the area this spring, but nothing as severe near us as you are experiencing!! I'll have to catch the news tonight.

Speaking of the news, Ann why aren't you out there jumping around, doing crazy things, screaming your name, trying to get on the nat'l news so we can all finally see you! :newwink:

ROFL!!! not flooding on my side of town!

That always cracks me up, the media can always find the one toothless, tattoo'd, cigarette in the mouth, baby on the hip, with beer in hand woman to interview about the event!!

ROFL!! Ann, you crack me up!!! Sorry to be insensitive, but my first thought when dh told me it was flooding down there was "it better not be raining in Corpus!". Ds is leaving for the youth beach retreat in the morning and I'm so excited for him. Glad to hear ya'll are OK, though.

I just got off the phone with my sister in Houston, and she said she wished their local media would acknowledge that lots of areas are fine, most roads are passable and this real disaster doesn't extend to everyone in the viewing area. She's having a hard time convincing some of her employees that they can leave their homes and get to work. She's thinking that the worst is probably over and that they are into the clean up stage. Hope that goes for you as well, AnnW.

I believe you really could use an ark. My uncle works as a dispatcher at Southwest and he was calle in yesterday, because they were having to reroute all flights from Houston. He said some of the interstates in your area were closed. he funny thing is you all are flooding and up in west Texas, ( Abilene) they desperately need some rain. Good luck and try to stay dry.

Saw a bit on the news the other night. It showed cars floating by, and more water than I care to see where land should be.
One thing I sort of had to laugh at is they showed three guys rowing down the street in a canoe. As they approched the street light, it turned red, so they stopped and waited for it to change and then carried on their way..

Glad to hear you are dry and ok. Hopefully things will look up soon.

everyone joining in the sing along???

:fish: Row, row, row, your boat
Safely down the street.
Turn right to Ann's house.
A good friend you'll meet!! :fish:

LOL, I heard all this singing and had to come in and see what was going on... Ann, I'm glad to hear that you are all okay and dry and that the flooding missed you. How awful for those who got flooded out though... what a mess!

Glad your staying dry and hope it stays that way.
I haven't heard anything on our news about it, but I've barely seen the t.v all weekend so I may have missed it.
Hope you don't need that row boat!

Love the song everyone :)

I was talking to some friends last night at the SNAC pool party. He has a brother and a sister in Houston and he has not been able to get through to them. He has a nephew (I've forgotten where he said he lived) that is a police officer whom he also couldn't get ahold of. He assumes that he is in Houston helping parents. My friend thought he'd try calling his nephew's police headquarters today to see if he could get word to nephew to call him. He was pretty worried. I relayed your message about most of Houston, but you see what they are showing on the news and you have to worry.

Thanks all! We were extremely lucky!!! It is amazing how many areas that usually never flood, got flooded!Cathy, the mayor was asking alot of private businesses in the downtown area to not open, most of all the government offices are closed there.
They are estimating over $250 million dollars worth of damage, so far 13 people died.

06-11-2001, 03:57 PM
AnnW- She works in a hospital, and they were on an emergency staffing program. They couldn't close and she was working hard to help people find alternate routes in to work. I hope it didn't sound like I was saying that it was nothing. The damage will take time and $$$ to clean up, and it's tragic that people have died. She had called to reassure me that the devastation wasn't as widespread as the media was suggesting. I hope they can settle some of the problems quickly.

Cathy...wow, if she is in the medical center she is going crazy then..bless her heart!! The medical center was really hit hard..they had to close 3 of the major trauma centers cause they had no power!!! It really moved the responsibility to the outlying hospitals to take over.
