One of my stepsisters called at 8 this morning. I answered with "what's wrong". lol
Her dad was taken to the hospital in the middle of the night. Mom called 911 when he had a chill (again) that he could not shake and his temp was 103.9.
He'd had an episode like this last week but the paramedics didn't see a need to take him in. My ss said he seemed to be in pretty bad shape when he arrived @ the hospital. Mom got home at 5:30 this morning so I'll wait to call her later.
He was sedated and intubated (sp?) to ease the stress on his lungs and increase his oxygen levels. He's to be moved to ICU as soon as a bed opens up.
If you'd pray for him, mom and his kids I'd be so grateful. Dd asked me, before she left for church, if he was going to die..... :\

Thanks. Mom just called and he's very very sick.
The paramedics took him straight on to the hospital and he'd solied himself and once he got to the hospital, he began throwing up (mom said in 20 yrs. she'd never know of him to vomit). They had to cut his clothes off of him, they were soaked with sweat from his fever.
Like I said, they sedated him to intubate him, but his blood pressure began to drop so they had to back off the sedation... he's uncomfortable and they have tied his hands down to keep him from pulling the tube out. How awful!
They don't have any diagnosis as of yet and were not painting mom a rose garden while she was there.
She hasn't slept yet and is taking a bath then going back down. Since I'm sick, I think I'll go straighten up her house while she's gone and take some juice and muffins over so she'll hopefully eat at some point.
Thanks for the prayers, ya'll.

Just talked to mom again and one of his dd's spoke with one of his nurses.
She said 'this infection has taken over his entire body. his body is septic'.
I'm not even sure what that means - if anyone does, fill me in, please. I'm gonig to google what I can. I don't even know what kind of infection she's talking about. I assume it means his body is poisoning itself....?
Thanks again ya'll for the prayers.

Prayers and wishes for strength are on the way. (((Jen)))
Sepsis is a condition in which your body is fighting a severe infection. If you become "septic," you will likely be in a state of low blood pressure termed "shock." This condition can develop either as a result of your body’s own defense system or from toxic substances made by the infecting agent (such as a bacteria, virus, or fungus).
I guess its a blood infection?

That's pretty much what I found when I Google'd it. :)
I read possible infections such as urinary tract, kidney, etc. would cause it.
I dunno. Hopefully we'll get a clear diagnonis back by the afternoon and hopefully he'll get put into a room. He's been in the ER b/c ICU is full. :(

Ya'll are really good, you know that?
I talked to mom and she said he looks sooo much better this afternoon.
They are weaning him off the respirator so they can do chest x-rays, CT scans, etc.
They've done blood work (infectious disease came down to see if was the C-diff again....) and should have results tomorrow, I assume.
The latest thought is: he has gall stones and maybe one has lodged itself somewhere causing a blockage and infection. The infection spread to the bloodstream cause the sepsis.
The dr. said 'this was no walk in the park, he was really very sick yesterday'.
He'll have a good road to get back to "normal" but at least he seems better today.
One of his dd's said "Daddy has the sparkle back in his eye". :) They feel good about the work the drs are doing and the communication going on. Whew!
I cleaned their house while she gone and put out some juice & muffins and brought her laundry home to do. Hopefully, she'll have some tea and go to bed.
I'm taking mom down tomorrow after I get off work; I hope we'll hear just what it is, and just what they are doing for him.
Thank you ALL, SO MUCH! I love you girls!

Holy cow, things keep changing with every telephone ring.
Mom called, she got a call from one of the drs. and sd is going to have his gall bladder out tomorrow or Tuesday (depends on when the dr. gets his schedule tomorrow).
Can you believe? I mean, I just can't. Mom was stunned but the dr. reassured her they can't make him better fast enough without doing this. It still seems odd to get a late night (well, 9 pm) call saying they're doing surgery when it's sorta been the last thing on your mind, y'know.
I know we're all thinking the same thing, do the benefits outweigh the major risks of this old man undergoing surgery...?
Keep those prayers goin' up, ya'll, k? :tinysmile
Prayers still coming your way!
Hang in there sista!
How is your mother holding up?
Your sd is still in my thoughts and prayers. Continue to keep us updated.
Gall bladder infections is one of the many things I have researched and know a little about. If it is not functioning properly it can cause the major infection that you are seeing with you dad. sure it might clear up temporarily with antibiotics, but removing it really is the only way to insure that it doesn't happen again. I am pretty sure they can do the surgery laproscopically (sp?) so that is less invasive at least.
(((((((((( to you and your family!!!))))))))))))
If it really is gall bladder that's causing his problems, then hopefully things will return to normal after it's removed. ITA that a late night call like that would be a bit shocking. :( Sometimes I wonder if doctors really think about stuff like that, or if they're just running on automatic?
I'm so glad he's feeling and doing better, Jenn!
With all the information changes every minute, I'm sure it is pure chaos for your family. ((hugs))

Which may be what they've been doing - limping him along with antibiotics and that's why he's not really been getting any better.
One of my bil's had his out laprascopiclly but with sd being septic, I'm wondering if they'll do one incision so they can check out the abdominal cavity for infection.... that'll be a much tougher recovery for him.
We'll just wait and see! :)
Thanks again for the hugs and prayers!

Well, surgery isn't until 10 am tomorrow. I think they are trying to give him a little more time to build up some lung strength. The tube down his nose is still in, the respirator is still in so he's not able to communicate and is groggy and just so pitiful to look at. :bawling:
I sent a dry erase board down there yesterday and he's used that a little bit. But he mostly just doses in and out.
Renee, mom said today she feels like she's aged 3 years since Christmas. :(
Mel, she had not had a bite when I picked her up at 1:00 today so we stopped off for soup, bread, banana and water for her and she at on the way to the hospital.
Gotta go call the stepsister to figure out the plan and transportation for tomorrow.
Thanks again ya'll. :tinysmile
