View Full Version : Some happy news
The developmental center called this evening wanting to know if I wanted to take over a cancellation appointment for tomorrow morning for ds to be evaluated. :yippee: This is a huge jump from his original appointment of April. The intake coordinator was impressed that all three sections (home/school/medical) of his paperwork was received already and she thought it was worth a chance thinking I might be crazy enough to jump at the chance of such short notice.LOL Nowwwww.....we got a ton of rain today and everything is coated, but the roads are still is great shape. It is supposed to be freezing tomorrow, so who knows what the roads will be like. Cross your fingers.

That IS good news, Amy. I hope the freeze holds off. They forecast bad roads and freezing rain all today, but the roads were pretty good.....although there were a few (idiot) accidents. What is so hard about SLOW DOWN!?!

That's great news... Amy. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that the roads aren't too icey/slippery and you'll be able to make it there without any problems.

that is wonderful news, amy!
will you come away tomorrow knowing anything? or will the results take a while to get back?
I'm not sure what they will be able to give me at the end of this evaluation. Last time he was evaluated, they did all the testing and talking to him and then had me come back a few weeks later to discuss their findings after they looked at the results now and read his history.
He is also seeing a psychologist that specializes in ADD and learning disabilities. Though ds has only seen him a couple of times, the doc noticed that there isn't a whole lot of eye contact and internal dialogue (that guides him); therefore, effects his social skills. He is not sure it is language based or Autistic Spectrum. I just looked him straight in the eye and said "You have been in practise for a long time and you have seen these kids from beginning to end. What is ds's adult world going to be like?" He said he will most likely be a computer geek. LOL You know the kind that are brilliant, but socially awkward. I found a strange sort of profound comfort from that. He guaranteed that he will be a functioning adult and able to live on his own. I looked at him surprised and he said "Amy, he won't be in a group home setting if that is what you are thinking" LOL Ironically, on my Dad's side, there is an uncle and a cousin who are just like this-Brillant in their mind, but very socially misplaced. Heck, their rich and and can live great lives, so I am happy. Ds on the other hand has a learning disability, so it will be important to continually help him so he doesn't become at risk.
My cousin's son (same age as ds) has Aspergers. That's exactly what the doc told her years ago and it's really come true! LOL He actually reminds all of us of Forrest Gump. He has been going to a boarding school in Illinois since last year that not only teaches at a high level, teaches him all the social skills that he needs to know out in the 'world', but he is looking at colleges right now too.
Great News Amy!! Hope the roads are clear for you this morning.

That is wonderful! So glad they called you!

Well everything is a blur and I have no idea what happened. LOL I had a headache while driving there-not only was it rush hour, but also icy and blizzardy in some areas. Ds was just DONE by the time the doctor got to see him. The first 1.5 hours was with the educator (the one who will write out the step by step report for his school) and then the Ped. talked with him a tiny bit. Ds was whining that he wanted to leave and he was so starving, so I barely ingested all that was being told to me. To the best of my knowledge he isn't ADD and the inattention is more do to with avoiding unpleasant things-like work. They are not quite putting him in the Aspergers category, but more in the PDD (Pervasive Developmental Disorder) spectrum. They want him to take one more evaluation (ADOS) to see how much of his lack of social skills is do to his dyspraxia or asperger like tendencies. The only other thing I remember them saying is that he has low muscle tone and he is quirky. LOL Supposedly, within 10 days, I will get the doctor's report and a few weeks after that, the educators report. It will be interesting to see how much of what I just now recalled is at all accurate.
Thanks for the well wishes. I am always relieved to get new eyes and perspective for him.
So he'll be going back again for further testing?
There was one more added evaluation they wanted him to take. It wasn't part of the original eval, but as they worked with him, they thought it was an important piece of the overall picture and will help finetune their findings. This appointment is once again in April, unless a nice fluke cancellation happens again.
How are things on your journey Pam? Is all his testing done?
Great news! glad you are getting some answers.

Glad you are getting answers Amy. I wonder though, with this kind of testing, would the results be any different at all if ds wasn't so tired and hungry and it was a better time of day for him. I found that out today with ds2, that some results were different and I question if it was because of the time the testing was done, the meds he was taking in spring compared to now.

That is a good question. They actually wanted to see him at his worse so it would give them an accurate opinion of him. If he was an angel, then they might of not been able to see what the school and myself see when he gets frustrated and how he deals with it. I know for at least the first hour of the appointment, they had 100% ds-he was perky and not hungry. I also don't know how much the MD's opinion of him (she only talked to him for 15 minutes) was reflected on meeting him vs. the mountain of history that was given to her prior to the appointment.
Yeah AMY
I like computer geeks....:)
That is wonderful! So glad they called you!

I thought I had read somewhere that he had Aspergers. Not bad for a computer geek.
