View Full Version : Would you do this?
I've been feeling a bit frazzled, short with the kids, overwhelmed and blah. Dh's family comes tomorrow and his cousin loves hiking. Dh has plans to take her a few different places. One of them is a hiking trail that leads up a (small) mountain. At the top there is a hermatage of sorts. There are a couple of army cots and a fireplace. I think that's it. I'm trying to talk dh into letting me stay up there for a night (or two or four), but am I crazy for thinking of it? There will more than likely be snow up there. Cell phones will probably work, if not, our handheld 2meter radio should work just fine.
Would you do it? What am I not thinking of (besides being in denial that I'll have to pack up there what I need, lol)?
are you going to be alone?
what kind of protection will you have from the weather, strangers?
how far away from help will you be if needed?
Can you find a more comfy place for a retreat? LOL It sounds beautiful, but will it give you what you are looking for in terms of a break?
Being a mommy of 4 AND home schooling, church commitments and such would make anyone in need of a little down time. :)

In a word, no. Send all of THEM up there for a night, and you stay home lol!

Donna... that sounds like something I would do. LOL
Not too sure if I would do it... :) Good luck with your decision.
ROFL! That's what dd thought I meant... leave them up there!
I would be alone, at the top of the mountain. Dh just said it's 5,000ft, so there's definitely snow, lol! I don't think I'd need protection from strangers... only idiots would be up there this time of year! I'm re-thinking it now I know the elevation. *sigh* I'm not sure how difficult it would be for help to get up there if I needed it. It's about a 30 minute drive to the base of the trail from the nearest fire station and then a 2-3 hour hike, depending on conditions.
I can't figure out if I'm desperate enough to do it or not.
Edited to add: The building was built by an author who found inspiration in the view and is left open to anyone who wants to use it at any time. I'd be the only one there (if I didn't say that already).

I would not because I'm to much of a what if person. Grab a girlfriend, and go stay a night at a hotel. Comfort food, board games and funny movies. Good old fashion slumber party.
I decided not to stay. I may go along for the hike, but won't stay overnight. There's no insulation in the shack and firewood is too heavy to pack in. With the snow up there it would be too cold. :( Looks like it'll have to wait for another time.
great idea Pam,
Might just be me, but I would want to go to a hotel with room service and a jacuzzi bath tub. ;)

Amen to that!!! I think it was just the sheer magnitude of the solitude that was appealing. ;)

you have solitude in comfort! LOL

Yeah... but then I have to deal with pesky people! Checking into the hotel, going to the restaurants, walking in the hall, etc. 'Course the spa might make all those inconveniences worth while. :goofy:

Room Service!
I totally understand the appeal of the SOLITUDE, but I think it would get cold and old fast. quick weekend alone OK AZ has to have some weekend spas near you?

There are some in Tucson and Scottsdale, but I doubt our budget could handle it right now. That's why I was going for the freebie, lol. Dh and I will work something out.
