so dd is having a luau for her 13th birthday. at first she said she just wanted pizza. now she is wanting it to be more of a buffet (like you have at your parties, mom) where the food is out and the kids can just graze.
her first choice was beef tender
uh, that would be a no. 2nd choice, my love?
well, mom, kids like junk but shouldn't it be luau themed??

ok..any ideas of junky luau food? LOL and just to confuse things more things that don't need to stay piping hot?

All I can think of is lots of fruit. Pineapple and kiwi.

Another thing I was thinking is Bar b qued pork...maybe pull pork so they can make like sandwiches.

Some things they did at my Dad's Birthday Party.....
LUAU FOOD:
For a fruit kabob tropical fruit (pineapple, melon, star fruit, kiwi, bananas, grapes, cantaloupe, and strawberries) and cut them up into medium sized peices, slid them on to kabob sticks. Sprinkle it with lemon juice and brushed it lightly with honey.
Tropical punch, mix punch (a pineapple, orange, banana one for me) according to the directions on the package. Then add ginger ale and a few scoops of orange sherbet.
Fishy snacks by pouring a bag of goldfish crackers (any kind) into a clean sand pail and add a sand shovel for scooping.
Cookies, chips, and soda,Pineapple Fanta
What about shrimp, they could have a peel-n-eat feast.

definitely doing a sweet/sour meatball and some kind of queso, but dd wants a spread! LOL
all my recipes are things like salmon, bruschettas ect. also going to have the chocolate fountain up too.

Teryaki Beef
The author notes that this dish is tasty, easy to make, and a great party favorite (just double or triple the recipe).
INGREDIENTS:
1 pound beef, cut in 1 inch cubes
1 15-ounce can pineapple chunks with juice
1/2 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 clove garlic, minced
1/2 teaspoon minced ginger
2 teaspoons sesame oil
PREPARATION:
Combine all ingredients, including liquid from pineapple, and marinate, covered and refrigerated, 3 hours. Thread beef and pineapple alternately on skewers. Discard leftover marinade. Broil about 8 minutes, turning once, until beef is cooked.

found some palm tree and dolphin cookie cutters on line (for $1 each..can't figure out how much shipping on that would be! LOL)
think i might do pb&j and ham & cheese sandwhiches in those shapes.
found some recipes that sounded good too from www.recipezaar.com
Honey Ham Wraps
1 (4 1/2 ounce) can underwood ham spread
3 ounces cream cheese
1/4 cup crushed pineapple, drained
1 tablespoon chopped green onions
1 teaspoon honey
2 8-inch flour tortillas
6 tablespoons mayonnaise
1/4 cup mustard
2 tablespoons honey

With a mixer, combine the ham and cheese.
Add 1 teaspoon honey, onion and pineapple.
Spread half the mixture on one tortilla to 1/2" from the edge.
Roll up from one edge.
Wrap in plastic wrap.
Repeat with the remaining mixture and tortilla.
Refrigerate 2-8 hours.
Cut each roll in 1/2" slices.
For the dipping sauce, combine mayonnaise, mustard and 2 T honey

Deli Apple Wraps Recipe #180680
3 tablespoons plain nonfat yogurt
1 tablespoon reduced-fat mayonnaise
1-2 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 large tart apple, preferably Granny Smith
4 ounces cheddar cheese (I use a reduced fat variety)
4 ounces deli turkey, thinly sliced

Mix together the yogurt, mayo and mustard in a small bowl. Set aside for dipping.
Core the apple and cut into 16 uniform wedges.
Slice the cheese into 16 equal sized wedges. The 2 inch square blocks of cheese work especially well for this.
Cut the turkey into 16 1-inch strips.
Start with a wedge of apple, top with cheese. Take the turkey ribbon and wrap around the little parcel. Repeat.
Serve wedges and dip together.

Wow... it sounds like it's going to be a lot of fun, but I feel sorry for you having to come up with something to serve. :) How much food do you think you'll need? I would just make a lot of a few things? 8o

She's SO lucky she's got you for a mom, Ann. No matter what you come up with I'm sure it will end up being just perfect. :)

Bowls of macadamia nuts, goldfish crackers, pineapple, mangos, um... other tropical fruits... If you do separate bowls instead of the kebobs so it'll take up more room! You could decorate the table with foods to take up room... bananas, coconuts, manogoes, whole pineapples, etc. Take pictures!!! I wanna see this spread!

i was thinking you could double up on some of the less expensive foods and double display them on the table
if the runner is too long, i'd tuck in the middle - the foods will be covering where you overlapped it and no one will notice. :)

i'm trying to remember what we served at dd's party
i know i had a goldfish bowl filled with goldfish crackers and dh grilled teryaki beef. we did pineapple and grapes on skewers...

Ham Wrapped Pineapple Bites
Present skewers of ham and marmalade-glazed fruit in luau style. Poke the toothpicks or skewers into a fresh pineapple.
Start to finish 25 minutes.

1 15 1/4 ounce can pineapple chunks, drained
1/4 cup orange marmalade
6 ounces thinly sliced cooked ham, cut into 4x1/2 inch strips
Wood toothpicks or skewers
1 10 ounce jar maraschino cherries, drained

In medium bowl, toss the pineapple chunks in the orange marmalade until coated. Wrap a ham strip around each pineapple chunk.
Thread each wrapped chunk on a toothpick or skewer. Add a maraschino cherry to each skewer. Arrange skewers on a serving platter. Cover and chill up to 2 hours. MAkes about 36 servings.

Tropical Fruit Salad
1 medium mango, seeded, peeled and cubed
1 11 ounce can mandarin orange sections, drained
2 kiwis, peeled, halved lengthwise, and sliced
1 cup tiny marshmallows
1 8 ounce carton vanilla yogurt
3 bananas, peeled and halved lenghtwise
1/2 cup coconut, toasted
honey (optional)
1 star fruit, sliced (optional)

In a bowl, combine mango cubes, mandarin orange sections, kiwi slices, marshmallows and yogurt. Cover and chill for 2 to 4 hours.
To serve, cut each banana half crosswise into two pieces. Lay two banana pieces in each of 6 dessert dishes. Stir in half of coconut into mango mixture; spoon mixture into dishes. Sprinkle with remaining coconut. If desired, drizzle with honey and garnish with star fruit. Makes 6 servings.

I'm thinking you could slice the bananas and divide this up so it goes farther.

Macadamia Nut-Crusted Chicken with Honey-Mustard Sauce
prep 25 minutes bake 45

Nonstick cooking spray
2 1/2 to 3 pounds chicken drumsticks
1 1/2 cups herb-seasoned stuffing mix, crushed
1 3 1/2 ounce jar macadamia nuts, finely chopped
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons honey
3 tablespoons butter, melted
1/2 cup mayonnaise
4 teaspoons Dijon-style mustard or yellow mustard

Preheat oven to 375F. Lightly coat a 15x10x1 inch baking pan with cooking spray; set pan aside. Skin chicken, set chicken aside.
In a shallow dish, stir together the stuffing mix and the nuts. In another shallow dish, combine the egg, milk and 2 tablespoons of the honey. Dip chicken into egg mixture, then into crumb mixture to coat.
Arrange chicken in prepared pan. Drizzle with melted butter.
Bake in the preheated oven for 45 to 55 minutes or until an instant-read thermometer inserted into chicken registers 180F. Do not turn chicken during baking.
Meanwhile, for sauce, combine mayonnaise, mustard, and remaining 1 tablespoon honey. Serve chicken with sauce. Makes 8 to 10 servings.

Hawaiian Lemonade

Serve this sweet, bubbly concoction in glasses wrapped with flower bands or -if you can- in ceramic tiki glasses. Garnish the glasses with paper umbrellas. prep 15 minutes

1/2 of a 12 ounce can (3/4 cup) frozen lemonade concentrate, thawed
1 12 ounce can apricot nectar, chilled
1 12 ounce can unsweetened pineapple juice, chilled
2 cups ice cubes
1 1/4 cups ginger ale (chilled in bottle)

In a large punch bowl, combine lemonade concentrate and 3/4 cup water; add apricot nectar, pineapple juice, and ice cubes. Slowly pour ginger ale down side of bowl; stir gently to mix. Makes 6 (8 ounce) servings.

Fish and chips snack mix

4 cups corn chips
1 6 ounce pckg bite size cheddar cheese fish shape crackers(3 cups)
2 cups oyster crackers
1 cup fried mixed vegetable sticks or potato sticks (shoestring potatoes)
1 cup tiny marshmallows

In a very large mixing bowl, combine corn chips, fish shape crackers, oyster crackers and vegetable sticks. Store in air tight container up to one week. Stir in marshmallows before serving. Makes 11 cups.

Pineapple Freeze

1 quart pineapple, lime, or orange sherbert or sorbet
Fresh pineapple, papaya or mango slices
1/2 to 3/4 cup pineapple ice cream topping
Pressurized whipped dessert topping

Scoop sherbert or sorbet into six dessert dishes. Add fresh pineapple, papay or mango slices. Top each serving with a spoonful of pineaplple ice cream topping. Serve immediately.

These all came out of Better Homes and Gardens magazine Kid's Parties. I hope it helps. I have more drink recipes if you are looking for some.
