View Full Version : Best way and time to buy a plane ticket

Any advice, anyone?
I'm buying mom a ticket "home" for her 80th birthday and want to get the best deal I can. I know I've seen Mark Greenberg on the Today show say when the best time (i.e. what day of the week, what time of day, even what the best day to travel is - or cheapest day) to buy tickets is, but for the life of me can't remember what's he's said!
Renee, you make travel arrangements all the time, any advice for those of us watching our $$ ?
Travel Tuesday-Thursday. I don't know if the time of day matters. Buy early. But online, it's cheaper than calling the airline.
That's all I can think of. I got some great deals on tickets from here to the states on travelocity. I bought about 8 months in advance though.

At least 2 weeks prior, basically the sooner the better
check Tue and Wed departure dates, staying over a weekend
you can start with Travelocity or Expedia to see who is flying NON stop or with the least layovers then go to the that Airlines web site.
run it all sorts of departure days and return days....
There are also some neat airlines that are sister airlines, like ATA is the sister to Southwest, great deals to Hawaii every now and again.
Read the small print, refundable? NON refundable...Charges for changes...some charge $25 for changes to these tickets, some up to $100.

Ugh, this is frustrating! I searched yesterday and found a flight for $178 and she'd leave here at 6am and be there by 8:30am.
TODAY, I searched the same info and got a result of $220 and the damn flight is 5 hours! I can't let an 80 yr. old woman take 5 hours to get to Nashville when it can be done in 2!
Why don't they always have the same flights all the time! Grrr...

Got it for $178 and she leaves here at 7am and gets in at noon - much better.

I did a quick search for you too, you used her senior status right, better prices most places.

I did a quick search for you too, you used her senior status right, better prices most places.

Yep, used sr. status and got it done. Emailed my brother and sister and gave them directions to go IN and get her, not pick her up on the curb. LOL
She gets flustered when she's doing something out of the ordinary. :tinysmile

Glad you found something good. You know you can always call the airline and as for assistance for her as well (FREE)
depending on the airline, you can probably arrange for an escort for her that will take her to the gate and then one that will meet her at the gate and take her to baggage. your brother won't be able to meet her at the gate.

I know you can't go to the gate. I just told them they'll have to go in and meet her - meaning, at the escalators, or security. So she won't get turned around from there getting to the right baggage claim etc.

I know you can't go to the gate. I just told them they'll have to go in and meet her - meaning, at the escalators, or security. So she won't get turned around from there getting to the right baggage claim etc.
i would still get an escort for her. we did that for my grandmother and we do that for my aunt when she flies.
