from the The Book of Questions by Gregory Stock:

"You are given $1,000,000 to donate anonymously to charity or a stranger. How would you dispose of it?"

At this point in my life I would say I would give it to a charity becasue they have the potential to help many people with that one donation, but if I could think of a stranger who could really use it or do something wonderful with it I would consider giving it to them. (Nothing like a wishy washy answer, huh? ;) LOL!)

I'd give it to my church but mark it for missionaries.

I'd probably give it to a charity where I know it could help many before I'd give it all to one individual. If I could split it among many people who I knew would use it wisely... I would probably do that.

I'd give it to a charity, but deciding which one would be very difficult to decide on. Off the top of my head I'd have to say Christian Relief Fund or Families First Foundation. Wouldn't that be fun. I definitely wouldn't give it to a stranger.

I would like to give a bit to a few different charities but if I could only choose one it would likely be the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. If it wasn't for them my Goddaughter would likely not be here now. She was two and half months pre-mature, and had a lot of medical problems besides. It took several months until she came home and will always need futher medical attention but is doing well.
They also have one of the worlds top research teams that have had many breakthroughs in the past years including isolating the gene responsible for cystic fibrosis.
It's good to know that if my babies ever need them, they are just around the corner.

I would probably give it to a charity such as "Make A Wish", or our local Children's Hospital.

I thought about donating to the school system, but I'm afraind one way or another the athletic department would come out ahead, if by no other way than re-routing funds somehow.

MM! I'd be delighted if some of the funds went to the athletic department. The athletic department of our town high school is basically non-existant. The only sports teams that are offered are either :Volleyball or Basketball. Niether of which are female teams and if you hadn't noticed are basically void of nesessary equiptment. The knowledge that there isn't enough money for updated and/ or any textbooks is enough without impounding it with the fact that these children don't have school spirit to unite them. Imagine going to your highschool without the football, soccer, baseball, softball, basketball, ect...team sports, not even considering the individual sports, ie, tennis, golf, swimming. For me that would have effected who I am today. Being a cheerleader in highschool was a great experience and I can't imagine my life another way. Having that bond we all shared the 4 years together helped me develop who I am today.
For these children, it's difficult to look forward to college, when they will make basically the same as if they
dropped out and worked at Burger King.
Kat - I understand your point of view and can understand where you're comming from. I went to a big football highschool. :-)
Jumping off my soapbox now, I'll apologize in advance to whom ever I have offended.
ßß!

Normally I would say one of the medical charities or a child with a medical problem. I like Ari's idea about starting a new one so you can help schools and not trust them to do the spending (big issue in Portland lately)!

This year I would say to an organization to help the farmers in Klamath Falls Oregon. Farmers were enticed to the area many years ago with a government water system that they had to buy into. They (the farmers) funded the irrigation system with the promise that they would get a certian amount of water. Well, this year there is a water shortage. There are two lakes that are dammed up. One is full to capacity right now. Enviromentalist sued to prevent any of that water from being released (even though its full) for a type of sucker fish. My understanding is the water is being saved in case. Some reports have shown the sucker fish does better with less water for a variety of reasons. Even though the farmers were origionally promised a certian amount of water they are now being denied any at all. Every last drop goes to the fish that some reports say would do better without it! They had a bucket brigade to manually move water out of the full lake into the irrigation system. I'm thinking about 1,500 people showed up. Funny how that didn't make the news but the 9 (or was it 7?) people that held a church vigile for McVeigh in the area did get media coverage. About 90% of the land in the area will recieve no water (the other 10 get it from other sources)
Last that I heard the local food banks were serving 1,500 families more than normal (normally about 3,000 -5,000). That's not even taking into account that the migrant workers have mainly already left. A convoy of trucks(100 semis?) left Portland to bring not only food but other items like diapers and razors. Some of the families went down to get government aid and were told that since they own something that can make money (a farm) they aren't eligible. They need to sell their farms and then they would have the cash to eat. The thing that kicks me it that the judge based his decision on an enviromentalist groups report (not the governments) denying the farmers a way to earn money and now the enviromentalist groups are the ones buying the land the farmers are being forced to sell! Seems like a conflict of interest to me!

Anyways these are hard working people that just want a chance to earn a living. The government (and enviromentalist) have taken that away and now say they can only get help if they sell their farms meaning they won't have a way to earn a living in the future and will be on welfare rolls. Government regulations at their finest. (NOT!) That's were my $1,000,000 would go. Unfortunately it wouldn't be enough.

Most of it would go to Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Some to something like Make a Wish Foundation, or maybe the other way around or half and half. Good question.

If it can be divided up between different places I'd definitely put some towards the St. Jude's hospital. Also, I'd want to make donations to organizations/agencies like WIC, Head Start, etc.

One of the first things I'd do, though, is pay the back tuition at the school for some of the parishioners who have really had a tough time.

I would probably give it to a charity, but I am not sure wich one. I don't think I would ever give money to a place where I didn't know what it was going to benefit. If I could divide the money up among some of my friends, I would do that too. I have a few that could use it right now.
