View Full Version : Leigh..re finger food
i think you asked yesterday about introducing finger food.
you can't really teach them to do it. using the pincher movement (forefinger and thumb) is a developemental milestone..he will do it when he does it.
you can put him in his high chair with some cheerioes, make sure his hands are on the tray. feed him a few so he knows what they are and then just sit back and see what he does. he will probably try to palm the food at first with kind of a scraping movement, he will also probably get frustrated! LOL but just keep encouraging him like with any other developmental milestone.

Thanks Ann.... I have been giving him the Finger Food Fruit Puffs, and he likes them as long as I put them in his mouth. He has tried palming them, and has even picked them up with his finger and thumb a time or two. He just won't put them in his mouth. He just picks them up and stares at you and smiles.

Cute... :) Keep offering it to him... it will happen.

That's great! just let him keep doing that. what you are trying to help him learn is the pick up motion first, then he will make the connection hand to mouth when he is developmentally ready.

Thanks... glad to know he is doing all right.
It is funny though that he won't put that in his mouth....everything else he picks up goes right to his mouth...lol!

And he could be he's becoming conditioned to hearing "no, no, that's not for your mouth" each time too! LOL!!
I bet he's just adorable! Love the avatar pic of him. :)

I remember trying so hard not to say 'no' if I could help it. I'd say "that's not to touch, or that's not for your mouth". That way she wasn't hearing no,no, no, so much and when I did say it, hopefully it meant more.

I thought I was trying not to say no no too much either....it is funny how you don't realize that you are saying it as much as you do until they start helping you out.
Thanks... glad to know he is doing all right.

babies also mimic, so you can pick up a cheerio and place it in your mouth to show him how....
I bet he is precious...

I do the same thing. Also if I'm wanting ds to stop doing something, I tell him what it is I want him to do instead of telling him to stop whatever it is he's doing (if you can follow that lol). For ex, if he's standing up on the bench, I used to tell him "Don't stand on the bench, you can fall and get hurt". It used to take me saying that a couple of times, and/or having to physically remove him from the bench. Now if he stands on the bench I say "stand on the floor please". He immediately gets down and stands on the floor. Then I proceed to tell him why (you'll get hurt, etc..).
I love that age, Leigh. Sounds like you're doing a great job with him!
