Do any of you have a favorite recipe for something that you love to make and people love it, but if asked for the recipe you'd refuse to share it???

I have begrudenly handed them out, but only once. If they loose it, their fault. LOL

I made a dish when we had our neighborhood block party and I had three/four people ask for the recipe... I gave it to them but left out a few ingredients. (my own additions that I thought made a huge difference) that I didn't want to share. :)

Now I know I answered this.... oh well.

No. My opinion is, I'm flattered when asked for a recipe so I think it'd be selfish to keep it to myself. Besides, my recipes are not original... they've been shared, or copied offline, from magazines, etc. so I don't have a problem sharing. :)

Thank you! ITA!

I am annoyed because a while back dh was at a gathering and came home raving about these salted nut roll balls, so I told him to ask the gal for her recipe. Fast forward to Friday night - he says "G" doesn't give out the recipe, but her dh is bringing some over. I just think it's dumb. It's not like she created this concoction on her own or that we wouldn't give her 'credit' if ever asked about them. kwim? And, it's not like we cross paths and would bring the same thing to the next event we are at. (The lady is dh's best friend's future mil and dh has known this woman for years, but it's not like we ever hang out with her.) Anyway, I googled the stupid things today and think I found the recipe. If they're the same I think I'll make a batch and send them to school with dh and when he shares with his friend he can go back and tell his mil-to-be that we made our own. LOL

I know it's just a stupid recipe, but if you know someone loves them so much, wouldn't you be happy/proud to share??? Okay, I'm done with my whining. I just think the whole thing is dumb and the more I htink about it, the more irritated it makes me. Guess I'll have to head to the "ball site" to burn off this frustration. :goofy:

One more question for those of you who don't share - what is the point of that?

Ann, I can totally see where you wouldn't give out a recipe for a 'signature' dish, treat, what have you for a business, but it's the people on a general speaking basis refusing to share with a friend that makes no sense to me. grrrr! LOL!

now, i just think your friend is being silly! LOL and no offense to diane, but sabatoging a recipe just seems wrong too.

but, i have been known to tell people i don't give out babysitters' phone numbers..they were all mine!!!!!

Thank you! It just seems childish to me.

Now, babysitters are a totally different story. LOL However, we don't use them often enough to run into trouble there. ;)

I didn't only because I knew that she'd probably bring it to the next block party, and seeing it was my own additions and had gone over so well, I thought I'd probably want to make/bring it again myself. I did tell her and the others that I had added a few other ingredients... I just didn't tell them exactly what, and they didn't ask. LOL

just wanted to add... My dad always made the dressing for our Thanksgiving celebration and it was awesome... :licklips: but he'd never give anyone the recipe. My mom knows the recipe, but she's been messing around with it... and IMO it doesn't taste half as good. I'd like to get the "real" recipe from her some day before it's too late. :( I'd just love to be able to hand down his recipe to the rest of our family so they can enjoy it as much as we all have throughout the years. :) I think he kept it a secret because he considered it HIS recipe... and he didn't want anyone else making it because then it wouldn't be just dad's anymore. LOL

dad's mom always did the dressing. it was never written down. she taught it to my mom. it was never written down. we kept asking mom to either write it down or teach me how to make it. her standard response was 'i'm not dying'..well we know how that worked out. it just kills me every year that we don't have it.

If so many restaurants (expensive ones too) are so willing to share recipes then I think it's silly for friends not to share. I wouldn't keep a recipe from anyone just like I wouldn't want them to keep it from me.

I will joke around sometimes and say oh no you can't have it, it is my secret recipe, but I never mean it, and I always wind up giving it to them...lol!

I am one that plays with recipes and changes them to my liking, I never follow the exact recipe except the first time, and then I make it the way I like it.
