View Full Version : Family Meals
Do you all do a SUNDAY dinner?
DH grew up very traditional, Italian family, Sunday dinner usually spagetti and meatballs/sausage....salad, bread...and they tried to have it early so that they could digest it is my thought...LOL....
My Mom would usually do bigger Weekend meal for us on Saturday's.....well DH and I still try to do this, but we don't always do the Italian dinner, with us both working, we try to cook something else on Sunday's that we might have craved during the week.
We always eat together at the table M-F so I am curious if we are the only ones? I have friends that do sandwiches most nights and always eat in their living rooms in front of the TV?

We always sit at the table together, even if there are only 2 of us. There is no tv in our kitchen. (Now that I think of it, I sit at the table if I'm alone too.....Don't know if the girls do.) I try to keep a Sunday dinner attitude, and will generally plan (not necessarily cook! LOL) a bigger/fancier meal for Sunday. But I love a family meal even if it's soup/sandwich.
We grew up with a big Sunday dinner, too, but I usually do easy stuff on weekends. We usually eat together through the week, too.
Growing up it was things like fried chicken, mashed potaotes, gravy, or roast w/all the fixin's.

I made a big meals a lot more when the girls lived at home... but I find it's a lot harder to cook big meals when it's just dh and myself. (everything you buy is in bigger portions) Dh will whine if he comes home to a "big" meal (say's he doesn't need it... :) ) unless it's for a birthday celebration or a special holiday. We eat a lot of soup/sandwiches... salads, smaller type meals, but we will still always sit/eat it at the table.
never did the big sunday meal growing up, don't do it now either. we did and we do eat as a family at the table whenever we can

We all eat together most nights, but with winter coming and ds hockey practice schedule, that sometimes goes out the window.
We often do something bigger or special once a week, but not always of Sunday. Depends of dh work schedule.

We grew up doing a big sunday dinner or Saturday depending on what work shift my dad was on... Some times it was the Italian way or some times it was a big Roast dinner. Miss that...trying to get out of our habit of eating in Livingroom...watching TV.

I never sat in the dining room for a meal growing up except one Thanksgiving and occasionally when we had company. I guess that's why it's so important for me to all gather at the dining table every night. I know I complain about having to make a big meal every night because brichard's parents always eat here, but I really love it. Brichard's parents left for Florida for the season again and we are really missing them coming over.

I wish I could say we eat as a family every night and only when discussions like this come up, do I realize how seldom it is. I'm out 2 nights a week, dd is out 2 nights a week, dh has church meetings monthly, so there are 2 weeknights we are home so we'll eat together then.
I didn't grow up with Sunday dinner and don't make one for my family now. But, we have been known, on occasion to eat in the den and watch TV - just the 3 of us, it's pretty relaxed around here.

My mom always cooked a huge Saturday evening dinner of Roast beef, potato's, carrots and onions. Anything left over was made into something else (usually soup) for our dinner during the week. When we were little we very seldom, if ever went out to eat, unless it was an occasional burger from McDonalds or Burger King.
dh and I made a beef pot pie, from the left over pot roast.... and a garden salad..... I can't wait to eat...eating at 5:00 PM

Our traditional Sunday dinner growing up was Fried chicken. Some times we'd get bologne links and hot dogs. They were specially made by the grocery store in town and tasted great so it was a treat!
Hamburgers were also a Sunday treat. Out on the farm we had steak and roast most of the time. Mom never grilled it she fried it so it's not like it was anything too great.
We usually do bigger meals on the weekend just because we're home to make them. I make a weekly menu, buy the food we need for it and post it on the fridge. That way we don't have to decide what we want to eat each night.

Growing up my parents and I always tried to eat together, but we didn't eat at the table, we ate at the bar. If something good was on TV we would eat inthe living room in front of the TV too. Dh and I never ate at the table until ds came, unless we had company, and then we would still eat in front of the TV sometimes. We eat at the table more now, but still we don't always. Sometimes we even pull ds's chair into the living room and eat in there. I think it is being together that counts, and I know they say the TV doesn't allow for conversation, but I don't agree with that because some of mine and dh's best conversations come from the stuff that happened on TV. I think the TV can actually be used as a conversation starter!
I started to post to this a while back and got side tracked. We eat dinner together as a family 99% of the time. When dh is gone the kids and I still sit down and eat together.
Most of the time it's at the table, but sometimes we eat on TV trays watching TV, but that doesn't happen too often. Sunday dinners are no "bigger" than other days, they just might take longer to prepare.

We usually sit down every night to eat dinner together. There are occasions, though, where we eat in front of the TV....like tonight when my Steelers were playing!! ;)
It's not hard for us to do now because my kids aren't involved in things that would keep them away from the table but I'm sure that will change soon!

i agree Tami we do the same thing. My kids are 16, 15, 11 and 10. We insist that they be home for dinner every night. Sometimes we will let them eat over at a friend's house but we don't just let them skip dinner to "hang out" with friends.

When the kids were home we ate at the dining room table.
Now dh and I eat in the den so we can watch the news or other TV shows.

We try to eat together every night of the week. Right now, it's pretty easy for us to do. As the kids get older, I'm sure it will get tougher.

right now my hubby and i eat our meals together. While my kids were all at home, we all ate together until they all got old enough to get part time jobs and then it was sometimes hard to do. Now they are all grown and so its just me and hubby.
