Any campers out there? Can you share your camp recipes/tips with me?

Do you know what those sandwich makers are that you stick in the base of your fire?? If so, you get squeezable butter and coat the inside and place your bread on each side and add any of the following:

Pizza:

Cheese
sauce
pepperoni

Baked apple pie:

apple pie filling
cheddar cheese ( I never liked the cheese in it)

club:

turkey
cheddar
tomatoes
cooked bacon
clamp the two side together and stick in the base of campfire. turn over and check to see if its done. Should look like a sealed grilled cheese sandwich.

Dh taught me this VERY sweet one. Cut a slit down ripe bananas with the peels ON. Stuff the slit with chocolate squares. Wrap everyhting in tinfoil and place on gril. Turn often. Within 1-2 minutes, Unwrap foil, get out a spoon and scoop and eat mixture.

We just went camping for the first time this past weekend so I hope you get some good replies! We went VERY simple and had hot dogs and sandwiches most of the time. We did have a good dinner the first night. The day before we left I BBQed a pork tenderloin that had a salsa marniate on it. I cut it into pieces and put it in a foil pack. When we went camping we just reheated the pork in the foil packet and put it on flour tortillas with shredded cheese. It was really good yet very simple.

We've made those too, only we also added mini marshmallows. :licklips:

"Hobo" dinners:
Hamburger patty, sliced potatoes and sliced carrots
Season with onion, salt and pepper and/or Lawry's. Wrap in a sheet of aluminum foil and grill for 30-40 minutes - flipping them halfway thru. Yum!!! We make these at home in the summer and dks love 'em.

We also grill homemade individual pizzas sometimes, but I don't know if that is more than you want to bring along camping?? You just make your dough and then fold aluminum foil in half to fit a small amount of dough -like the size of a Pizza Hut personal pan pizza :) Spray the aluminum foil with cooking spray or use olive oil. Add the dough, pizza sauce and any toppings you want. Grill on low heat until the cheese melts and edge of crust is golden. :licklips:

Do you prepare the packets before you leave home? I thought about this recipe but was afraid the potatoes would be black?

One thing I did make when we camped last weekend was shish-k-bobs. Chicken, zucchini, squash, onion, mushroom, tomato, green pepper sprinkled with dill and garlic. It was a nice change from the burger and dog routine. Of course I lived primarily on s'mores!!! :licklips:

These sound great! We do have one of the "sandwich makers." We made grilled cheese, but I never would have thought of the pizza. We did think about making french toast with it next time though. The banana/chocolate thing is a definate!!

No, just make them up right before you grill 'em. You could make the patties at home, use baby carrots, and then all you'd have to do is peel and cut potatoes. :licklips:

I used to be in Girl Scouts and we made a version of KarlaB's recipe. It is exactly the same except we used corn instead of carrots, and we called them knights in shining armor. I have also used that recipe with chicken, potatoes, corn, and carrots.

I am making my shopping list for our next camping trip. Anyone have anything else to add??
