Well, after all the nervous tension, and practice, and new gray hair (on me of course), dd passed her road test. I'm happy for her. We stopped at the insurance agent's on the way home, and the additional premium isn't as big as I thought it would be. I sure hope she can afford it.... I may be willing to pay the first installment as a little present, but after that she's on her own. Now I have to actually do something about a new car, instead of thinking about it, which I've been doing for a year. I think she'll love driving my old beat-up van. That's on the days that I can't come up with an excuse for her to stay home. LOL

Congratulations to your DD!

Condolences to you!!! ;)

In Texas, now, they don't even have to take the driver's test anymore. They take it as part of driver's ed, so when they turn 16 they just go and apply and get their license. NO FAIR..you don't know what driving is till you have to go around the block with the DPS guy sitting next to you behind the mirror sunglasses not cracking a smile and praying "please God, let me parrallel park this car without hitting the curb!!!!!!"

She is very excited. She just left to get gas--my credit card of course!
Ann- thanks for the condolences. I appreciate your understanding. I do remember when the girls were little, and some of the neighbors were dealing with teenage stuff. I felt a touch envious--they could turn their backs, and go out, and their kids seemed so responsible and independent. Now I see it from the other side. HA-it's not worse really, just a whole new set of worries.

I remember taking my road test- you didn't know until the notice came in the mail (about a week, I think) if you even passed. I was so nervous, I thought I'd be sick with the stone-face, monotone inspector in the car. It is an experience that your Texas youth should have.

Congrats to your dd! Ann, do they have drivers ed. in the schools here, or is it something the parents pay for? when I was in high school we had drivers ed., but I know Oklahoma cut that a long time ago.

I graduated high school in 1984 and I was in the last driver's ed class our school offered my sophomore year. If we had driver's ed and passed we did not have to take a "road test" but did have to take the written test. I think driver's ed was great. The teacher even showed us how to change a flat tire (and buy milkshakes at the McDonald's drive thru!)

Congrats to your dd!!!!

I don't know. We had to pay for it at our school when I took it, but don't know now.

:yippee: CONGRATULATIONS to your dd! I'll bet she is SOOOO excited! I'll bet she was really nervous during her test though. How is she with her parallel parking? My middle dd had only parallel parked ONCE before she took her test... and that one wasn't even a "good" parallel park either. LOL When she went to go take her test she did a PERFECT parallel park. LOL I guess that's what most people mess up on. :)

We had to pay $225.00 for my dd to take drivers ed. from her High School. It was much cheaper than they charge at our local driving school here and it actually covers a lot more things than the driving school does. She's really nervous because tomorrow she has to drive on the highway with the instructor and she doesn't really want to. I can't believe she doesn't want to... when I first got my permit I wanted to drive all of the time. LOL I am kind of anxious for her to get her drivers license because we are constantly having to drive her here, there and everywhere all of the time. It has gotten much better lately because one of her best friends just got her license about 4 months ago and they pretty much do everything together anyway... so she's just been picking her up on her way. Also... her boyfriend already has his drivers license too... so that also helps. :) It seems like the older and more social they get the more us parents start feeling like a Taxi service. LOL It's almost a relief when they finally get their licenses. :)

She's a pretty good parallel parker (Not that she'll ever use it--I hardly ever do, and I'm actually working in the city.) But if she was really nervous, she hid it really well, and I know her.
Her school is reintroducing Driver's Ed next summer, in time for my other two. She had to take it at another school... 4 months, twice a week for 1.5 hours. Test and lecture one day and driving the next. She also had to observe traffic court, tour the trauma center in a hospital, cut out articles about car accidents, and attend a 3 hour seminar on drinking and driving. I think it was a good program.

Wow! That does sound like a great program. I took driver's ed thru my school 15 yrs ago and it wasn't that in-depth! I think that's great that they took it beyond just the classroom and basic driving info!!

You forget that I've been reading your posts for the past several months. Except for your wild fling with Farrah (which I'm sure gave dh a few highlights in his hair), it sounds like you have been pretty busy (in a going out of my mind, why is this happening to me, why did I have children anyway kind of way). I wonder how people with perfect lives even live with themselves while the rest of us are out here struggling.

Sounds like a very good program. I'm passing these ideas on to our driver's ed program.

I remember when oldest ds went to take his road test. We pulled up to the police station which is right off the interstate and my immediate panic was, we never practiced interstate driving (I was shaken enough from highway driving. ). I prayed they would'd get on the interstate. As ds and the officer left the parking lot in my new Explorer I watched as they got on the interstate. I prayed the whole time they were gone. He did just fine.

It is along about this age that you and Miss Clairol become good friends. Now youngest is 12 and I have to relive those times. :yippee:

I have a niece who just graduated this year and has no desire to learn to drive but she has to. Leaving for college soon. She is going to Hendrix in Conway, but she is still waiting on word from a school in Vancouver BC that she really wants to go to. My sister just bought her a new car this week. Actually they bought 2 new cars and I had to take my sister and BIL to the bank to pick them up after they were delivered from Little Rock. Must be nice! Anyway this girl just has never had any desire to learn to drive. How strange is that for a teenager.

Best Wishes to all mothers out there with new drivers.

Your dd must have felt pretty confident that she was going to pass... LOL My dd has had classes every day since school let out (June 8th) for 3 hours a day... plus one Saturday class. They'll take her out driving 3 times... one being today, and then they're all done. It sounds like your dd had a lot of extra activities that my dd didn't get to do... traffic court, the trauma center, the articles... and what an especially good idea to have them attend a seminar on drinking/driving! They can never use the excuse that they "didn't know". :) I wish they had done that here. I'm very nervous for my dd but yet very excited for her too. I think it's especially hard because she's my youngest one... and a little hard to accept the fact that she's growing up and no longer a "baby". LOL She's very responsible... so I know that she'll do well and take what she learns seriously. Now with a job she's been saving up to buy her own car... which I think is good. I think that some kids take care of things a lot better when they are the ones buying and paying for it on their own. I told her that she could have my La Barron... but I think it's just that she wants something that a teen might appreciate more. By the time she can get her license she should have quite a bit saved up. Then she can start saving up for gas and also for her share of the insurance. LOL

Congrats to all new drivers. :)
I didn't even bother appying until my early 20's. I was very nervous when I went for the road test, I kept thinking "how am I going to get groceries if I don't pass" LOL I cannot imagine my kids getting theirs, too far away, thank goodness!
