I am scheduling surgery in Palo Alto, CA soon to have a laparoscopy done on my endometriosis. Any one from that area have any advice on fun things to see or do. I figure if I'm gonna go that far for something unpleasant I might as well squeeze in something fun...

Wow, from Ohio to California, I sure hope everything works out well.
We moved from that area about a year ago, so I can put out some ideas for you to consider. I'll list several, but I don't know what type of things you like to do...
1. In Palo Alto, Stanford University campus has tours available, I believe. It has some unique architecture. Then if you take University Avenue out of the campus, that street has lots of little boutiquey stores, and very nice restaurants (pricey area). It is nice to just walk up and down the street. Pick up a home buying guide for some real laughs about the prices in that area.
**2. Head out highway 92 toward Half Moon Bay. It is often overcast there, even in the summer, so take layers. The water is very cold. If you go south, you can head to Pescadero, a little town on your left as you drive down the coast. You will have wonderful views of the ocean as you go, lots of little beaches to choose from. In Pescasdero, there is a "famous" restaurant, Duarte's. Arthichoke soup is their specialty. Lots of bay area people travel to dine there. Then continuing south along the coast, you can head to Santa Cruz. There is a boardwalk there and a beach. (Boardwalk may be a little scuzzy, but apparently has a great roller coaster.) Dinner at The Crow's Nest is excellent, also nearby Capitola has lots of quaint little shops.
If you choose to go north from Half Moon Bay, head for the wharf at Pillar Point for lots of fresh seafood, eating outside if you want. Or continue up to Moss Beach Distillery. That is our favorite. Their clam chowder is wonderful. Also in that area is the Miramar Beach Inn, also excellent, with great views of the water. If you continue north from there, you will eventually go through Pacifica and hit San Francisco. On a clear day, that part of the drive is spectacular.
3. Of course, San Francisco itself. Lots and lots to do there. If you like to shop, I'd say, go to Union Square and just walk around and be entertained. FAO Schwartz, Macys, NM, Ghiradelli Chocolate, and on and on. My other choice would be Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39. Lots of small shops, street entertainers, and great seafood.
4. If you have time, head north of SF to Muir Woods (giant redwoods) or if you have more time, further north (highway 101) to The Avenue of the Giants (drive through the redwoods).
So, those are probably the high hits. If you like something in particular (museums, etc), let me know and I can think about a recommendation. Or if you want more info on one of these suggestions.
I think it's been pretty hot during the days there, but it almost always cools off at night, especially on the coast or in the city.
