Dh and I used to bbq a steak but stopped a long time ago. Sometimes I made a ham which is what my mom always did. I think today we are having a roast at friends. So I guess we have never really kept on with the same traditional meal each year. How about you all?

Black eyed peas!!!
can't decide if i am going to slow cook some with ham and onions and make more of a soup over rice or as a dip (texas caviar)

Were making some enchilada's... no special reason for them. We'd probably be making them whether it was New Year's Day or not.

When I was a kid, we always had roast pork for New Years day. It was a big meal--formal-ish with wine and toasts for the new year. It shifted over the years to chili (to accomodate the #@%$@ football games!).

This year we are having the baked ziti that dds were too sick to eat on Christmas Eve. It's been in the freezer, and I won't have to cook.:thumb:
Who says I'm not flexible??! LOL

No traditional meals here. I would cook one if I'd thought ahead (I'm so bad for not doing that). Last year dh took us out...I'm hoping I can pursuade him to do the same this year (after I told him I wasn't getting dressed today, lol).

We went to a gathering today with brichard's parents. I took AnnW's brisket, black eyes, mashed potatoes and banana torte. They also had corned beef & cabbage. The brisket was a big hit as always!

Ya'll's grocery stores were open today? Ours were closed. Nothing open today except maybe some restaurants, donut shop (Tim Horton's) and convenience stores.

I ended up getting dressed because ds called for a ride home for himself and a friend and dh was out at the time. I made chicken fingers, mashed potatoes and corn/peas for dinner. Not very creative, but it hit the spot.

Bev, it varied. There is one grocery store that closes every Sunday and all major holidays, so most shops in their strip centers close too (like our Hallmark store is in a strip with one of their stores, so we close when they close. yay!). Other chains like Food Lion and Kroger were open, and of course, WalMart.

Always, always serve black-eyed peas (even though I'm the only one who eats them). Might explain our luck.

I fried some potatoes, onions & ham in a little olive oil, peas, green beans for everyone else, turnip greens, green onions, and corn bread.

Absolutely everything was open around here today. They had a lot of big SALES today, which I avoided... but I noticed all the parking lots were totally full.

I stayed in my jammies today until I had to leave to take my mom's dog for a walk tonight. Felt good...

I don't think I've heard of black eyed peas for luck. Like Diane said in another post, I don't think I've even tried them either. No reason, just that I don't like regular peas so I wouldn't think of getting/eating these. We tried to force feed the kids peas on New Years Eve and they barely ate any, can't blame them. I only bought them for the baby but I guess dh didn't know that when he cooked them. :)

I remember an old neighbor lady putting a dime in her peas or cabbage or something, lol , whoever got the dime had good luck for the year. Seems like a gross choking hazard to me now.

Never heard that about greens, though I almost always make them on New Years.
