View Full Version : Men and Spitting (Vent! Don't read while eating!)

Why do men spit? Do your husbands, fathers, brothers and sons spit? No one in my family does and I am just amazed at the number of men who do.

We went to a public fountain in a town square today where little kids run around and get wet and this grown man snorted and spit right at my feet--right where all these kids were running around. I thought I was going to be sick. We left.

Please tell me you all teach your boys not to spit!

Eeeeewwwww! Mickey! No, my boys don't spit. I don't think it would occur to them. I mean, if something funky was going on, well, maybe, but eeeewwwww!

I know I'm a big mouth, but if some guy spit at MY feet, he would have heard about it from me! Pig.

I've never considered myself much of a spitter, but I do remember doing it some as a child. Of all sports, and maybe we were just trying to be like the tobacco chewing pros, baseball is the sport that comes to mind. Spitting was almost as much a part as getting in the batting box as thumping your bat on home plate!

I know in some states they have made it illegal b/c of the spread of disease.

I don't really spit anymore, but remember doing it during baseball or the occassional "spit for distance" on a lake. I know it is gross, but little boys are kind of gross if you think about it! :)

My claim to shame is blowing my nose during a meal. I have learned to walk out of the room and go in the bathroom with the fan on and water running so dw won't hear me! My sinuses just seem to turn on when I eat food, especially spicy food, and I think it is much grosser to hear one blow vs. continuing sniffling that lasts throughout the meal.

But, the sound of me doing that will cause dw to stop eating completely. Don't get me wrong, I know it is uncouth to blow your nose during dinner, but when you have a cold or your nose is running... you only have so many options! If you have a really bad cold, you will have to spend more time in the bathroom then at the table!

UGH! That's another one--blowing your nose at the table! GAG! Talk about totally ruining a meal! Glad you leave the table now, Brichard!

Snorting itself disgusts me. I have a female friend who snorts (not just "sniffs"--it's like the precursor to how men spit, but she doesn't spit) and it seriously makes me feel sick. Go blow your nose!!! With the water running and fan on! ;) LOL!

Do people just not realize they're doing these things? Yuck!

p.s. I'm going to have nightmares now! Good night!

I think spitting is absolutely disgusting... Ugh!!! When I asked dh WHY guy's spit... (he doesn't spit) he said is that it's a "guy thing". Well then... I'm so VERY happy that I was not born a guy! LOL

My dh does blow his nose at the table though and I absolutely hate that too. Actually, if I had to choose between the two... I think I'd rather have an occasional spit. LOL I've complained and so have the girls, and all he say's is... "Well what would you rather have me do... blow my nose or let it run all over the place? Ugh!!!! Not a pretty picture... I wish he'd leave the table like Brichard does because I think it's being very inconsiderate to those who are "trying" to enjoy their meal. It's especialy embarrasing if were eating out and he does it. I could just die of embarrassment! I don't think he or any of these guy's think anything of it... or they don't really care. It's GROSS!!!!!

Diane...

Dh does copenhagen, so he spits that, but he just doesn't spit for no reason and like jbaxter said he has enough sense to do it away from people.

One other thing I wanted to mention on this subject is that people should be a little more tolerant to asthmatics when it comes to the spitting thing. My asthma rarely bothers me, but when I get a cold it goes straight to my lungs. I get a nice "horse cough" to go with my asthmatic bronchitis.

But, one of the questions a doctor asks you is what color your mucous is that you cough up. The darker it is, typically the worse the infection. Green is bad, yellow is in the middle, and clear is a sign things are clearing up. I make some gross sounds when I cough, but what can you do? You don't want to swallow that stuff... yuck! I guess what I'm saying is that sometimes grossness can't be avoided.

I'm also a little curious about something else. When kids have a runny nose at the dinner table, do you find it less disgusting as an adult spitting or blowing their nose? I think it is interesting how much we tend to tolerate with children b/c we know we have no choice!

Regarding asthma, I know two females who suffer very badly with it (one gets bronchitis a lot and even smokes as well). I've witnessed a few coughing fits, but I've never seen or heard either of them "cough up" anything and spit. Maybe women are more discrete? Maybe they only do so quietly in the bathroom? I don't know. I know that some people need to spit under certain circumstances, but I still don't want to see or hear it.

Regarding runny-nosed kids at the dinner table, my ds is 5 and goes to the bathroom to blow his nose, too. He excuses himself and goes to the bathroom when he has gas, he chews with his mouth closed (only needs occasional reminders) and doesn't use his hands to eat. I'm not more tolerant of him if he's capable. When he was a baby in a high chair and not capable of these things, that was different.

My son is a "sniffer." I told him to blow his nose one time in the ped. office. She said actually it is better to "snort" it up than blow it out. I said maybe so, but it is disgusting!

My son is 6 years old and as far as I know only spits toothpaste. I hope it continues that way.

No spitters here, either. I hate it when you see some guy "spit" at a public place....park, ball game, etc. Ewwwww!!! I hope it's a bad habit my boys NEVER pick up!

Hi , BigDaddy here, just for a second. I just read this over dw's shoulders and was appaulled.
Please note that

Big Daddy is not a spitter!!! and if I ever caught ds doing any such rude and vulgar thing, he would not be a very happy young man for a while.

Take care all, I will try to catch up on my posts soon. I'm falling behind and I can't catch up!!!1
