View Full Version : Family Vacations?
We have confirmed our week at the beach. :yippee:
before we confirmed our beach vacation we looked into RV'ing? Anyone done/do this? Do/did you love it?
It always looks fun, but I was happy our beach week was confirmed  (don't tell the kids)
We used to camp when I was a kid...we traveled across the US every summer in a camper (Mom, Dad, Brother and me) I have great memories, but both my brother and I are firm HOTEL people now..LOL...the more stars the better...LOL...
we could never understand why we always ended up in a tent while my folks were in the camper...:brow: :newwink:
We actually own a camping trailer. It's in the states right now, but we used to go camping all the time. We started out tent camping and then as we made more money we bought the trailer. We are big into 4 wheeling and dirt bikes so we would take those with us as well. We are dying to go camping, but it's been 2 years and we have 2 more to go. it's probably the main thing we miss about living in the states. Normally when we camp we don't go to camp grounds with hook ups, it's mainly in the desert or National Parks.

LOL sounds like my childhood, my mother refused to stay in a KOA or hook up camp ground....
I grew up camping and was our main form of vacations all summer long. Most were in cohoots with my parents square dancing:rolleyes: It was big in the 70's and 80's to have major groups of square dancers go camping and they would dance in the pavilions while the kids did their own thing.
We have checked in RV's also. It just didn't make sense to us because they were asking for $800 per week and a max. of 100 miles a day. Count in the gas and camping fees, it was cheaper to just fly to Florida. LOL
So far I am going to Cape Cod with my girlfriends and then to Disney with dd, so I just might plan a couple of weekend trips instead of a big summer trip. The kids want to go to the African Safari in Canada and white water rafting in the Adirondack's.

We started out camping in a tent with the kids when they were little. One weekend during one of our camping trips in Hinkley (by the casino) we saw signs going down the road directing campers to campsites you could bye. Our curiousity got the better of us and we went in to see what they had to offer. It was just awesome... and we bought one that day. That week we went out and bought a camper. We could just park/leave it on our site so we wouldn't have to haul it back and forth. This place had all kinds of activities geared towards children and adults alike... We even bought a golf cart to get around (it was like a small community) and had a blast. They had a huge swimming pool, so the kids could go swimming any time they wanted. Golf, arts/crafts... roller skating in the "great hall". We went there each/every weekend until Dawn got too old to want to go anymore. Iit was nice because the kids could invite their friends... I'm kind of missing those day's. I'd like to take Sarah some day... I think she'd like that.

My in-laws owned a small motor home, and we went camping with them a few times in it. I'm not too sure I liked it that much... or maybe it was just because they were there and we couldn't go/do whatever we wanted, when we wanted. Our friends own one and said they'd like us to come along with them one weekend... so I'm thinking we'll probably give it another try.

I always wanted to rent a houseboat and just go... :) but then I'm not the type who likes to just sit/do nothing, and I'm afraid I'd probably get very bored. It's not like you can just get off and drive somewhere and come back.
One of our friends has been giving us his, what he calls a cabin, but is more like a house for a week during the summer... so I'm sure that's what we'll probably be doing again this year. We usually invite the girls and their dh's... but last year Dawn/James, Sarah were the only ones who could make it. I'm hoping they'll all be able to make it this year...

Years ago dh's family and some friends would rent a houseboat every year. One year when we were dating, I went along with them. It was a blast. His parents have talked about doing it again with the grandkids now that they are all older and know how to swim. We just live too far away, but I'm sure it will happen some day.
As for our family vacation this summer, we are going to Italy. I know it's going to be expensive, but my sil is coming to visit and that's where she wants to go. Not sure exactly what part we are going to yet. We have a few months yet to plan.

We never plan a big family vacation that would take us far. We're lucky if we can get away for a couple of days in the summer, but we have gone out to my parents a few times for one to three weeks which is what I would rather do. We have gone camping a couple of times with the kids and I'm really wanting to buy a pull trailer and get rid of the tent thing. lol Dh's on the fence because they are not cheap but I think it's worth it for the time we'll have with the boys. I think we could do several over night or weekends over the summer and now ds4 is old enough.
This summer my brother and I are planning to meet somewhere in the middle of us (an 8 hour drive) to camp for a few days or a week. We're trying to decide if we want to tent it that long or rent a cottage, guess depends on what we can find. I'm thinking Wasaga Beach area because we can camp and have town nearby plus they have a huge, beautiful beach and water park. I'm sold. lol

My FIL/aunts origionally came from Italy and they always talked about going back... but never got to. That's one trip I'd love to take. How exciting for you/your family! You're going to have to let us know all about it after you get back. :) :)

Not really... we found new/different things for them to do. It was sad though when we finally decided to sell it. Now Dawn talks about going back and buying a lot so they can go camping. She wants Sarah to experience all the fun of camping that she had when she was little. If that happens.... we'll probably camp out with them a few times.

My Dad and his wife rent a houseboat on Lake Powell every year and invited some of the kids and their families, we haven't been, not a lake gal myself...but they all seem to have a great time.

We are going back to Florida for spring break. We've been to Florida 3 times as a family and I been one extra time just this year. We do small camping trips in the summer and always spend a couple days at an amusement park. I'd really love to do an "out west" camping adventure.

Totally different body of water...I like the SURF!

do you surf?
i usually hear people preferring the lakes to oceans cause of critters.

I'm the opposite! 8o I'd rather be in the ocean because there seem to be less critters, lol!! We went to Apache Lake and the fish kept coming up to the shallows, nibbling on our ankles. 8o
I also prefer sand to the mud and muck of lakes. There's something peaceful about the endless view of the ocean, too. It seems to be about the only place you can go anymore for an uninterrupted view of the horizon. *sigh* I am definitely planted in the wrong place, LOL! I'd give my eye teeth to live on the beach.

I have been a surf rat since I was about 14....took it up to meet boys and well, loved it... I have been teach ds and dd to each summer...
Dh and I also are Certified Scuba Divers....
I love the ocean, not a fan of lakes, I have seen snakes twice in lakes, and well the floor of a lake is mushy/swampy like....I guess its what you grow up with...

Its pretty easy, my best gal pal in high school and I loved surfers but the only way to really get to know them was to surf, so we both learned from a sweet man in Santa Barbara one summer, who we still have dinner with on our annual summer week at the beach, by the time my girlfriend and I got "decent" on the board, we had outgrown surfers dudes, as they weren't all that
I get on a board when I can....ds likes it, but dd loves it!

Oh I have seen one in a lake YUCK...freaked me out!
