My latest romance from the 101 Nights of Great Romance was to basically have a "chick flick" weekend with your spouse. And before I am attacked, the author of the book is female and refers to the movies as "chick flicks"! lol :) dw and I watched The Philladelphia Story with Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant, and Hepburn. I also bought her the movie An Affair to Remember, another Cary Grant classic. The movie is what Meg Ryan and Rosie O'donnel are watching in the movie Sleepless in Seattle.

The Philladelphia story was a good movie, but I must confess my favorite parts were Jimmy Stewart. He is absolutely my favorite actor and in my eyes he can make no bad pictures! It was a little slow and not on the same lines for me as Casablanca, but I love seeing the classics.

An Affair to Remember seems to be the grandaddy of many of the romantic movies we see today. There were many similarities to Sleepless in Seattle, but that movie is referenced throughout. I thought the story line was enjoyable and it was a great movie.

But... these are the first two Cary Grant movies I've ever watched. And niether dw or I can seem to grasp why he is so admired as an actor. He just seem so stoic an far removed as a character. Jimmy Stewart lets you feel anger, tears, joy, admiration... the whole gamut of emotion.

I'm not saying Cary Grant isn't a babe... you gals will have to tell me that! But... I'm not impressed with his acting at all!

I've never seen the older movies you mentioned, but I would really like to!

Speaking of "romantic" movies...I was surprised at how many people thought The Bridges of Madison County was romantic. Didn't see it as romantic at all.

We like Merchant Ivory movies for drama/romance. Loved "A Room With a View" and also liked Howard's End.

An Affair to Remember is one of my favorites! Nora Ephron was inspired by it to write Sleepless in Seattle and that's why the movie is referenced all the way through. As a side note, the sound track to Sleepless is outstanding, and she used alot of timeless music in it, to give it that timeless appeal.
I have never thought of Cary Grant as wooden..if you want to see wooden and no chemistry watch the remake with Warren Beatty and Annette Benning!
I like Philadelphia Story also..thought both guys were great in it.
