Okay I feel like a total moron, but.... I stepped on a pretty hefty sized tack a few minutes ago and I know my tetanus booster is not up to date. Do I have to go to the ER tonight or can I wait until the morning when my doctor's office is open? I'm just SOOOO thankful that it was me that stepped on it, instead of one of the kids! Yikes!

Tetanus shots usually last for 10 years; however, if you have had a severe wound with a rusty nail, a booster shot within 48 hours is extra protection... I'm assuming the same would apply for a tack.

Ditto what DianeP said. I had DS in at the docs last month for a checkup and specifically asked about the tetnus shot since he's in sports. They said 10 yrs between boosters but if he was hurt with something rusty or dirty in between bring him for a booster. BTW - the tetnus is one of the DPT shots. Soak your foot in hot soapy water for 15 minutes. The thing with a puncture wound like that is that it doesn't have a chance to bleed and flush out like a larger wound. They seal up so fast. Look for swelling. I'd say pull out your shot records and call the docs office tomorrow. They might recommend a booster even if you are up to date.

Not necessarily looking forward to the shot but at least it wasn't an immediately urgent thing. The tack wasn't rusty or anything but it's been well over ten years since my last one so I suppose I should get it over with. :)
