View Full Version : Dog pee smell
We dog sat my mother's shih tzu for two weeks while they were on vacation and apparently he peed in the kid's play room (he's still young and in the training stages). After he went back home our dog decided to retaliate and started peeing in the house too. I don't see any stains on the carpet (two big area rugs with concrete underneath) and I can't tell where the smell is coming from. I took the rugs out this morning to bake in the sun, hoping that would neutralize the smell and will be scrubbing the floor. Short of making two new rugs from the hides of these dogs can you suggest anything to help??? We're having company on the 4th and this is driving me nuts. To top it all off everyone usually enters our house through this room!!! AAARRRRGH!!!

Morning everyone! I hope everyone had a great weekend! Pam... Try using a product called Nature's Miracle on your carpets. You can probably get it at any pet store. It works wonders for removing the "pee-pee" smell out of carpet. I have a friend and her dog's trainer recommended it to her. Even the pooch couldn't smell it anymore! :) Good luck... I hope you can find it, or something else that works.

My mom always says to use vinegar to neutralize smells. Of course vinegar has an odor of is't own, but that does go away if you use it. Good luck!!!! :)

Hmmmm, not sure I'd go with puppy-hide throw rugs! LOL!
Diane's suggestion sounds great! You might call and ask your vet or call a pet store if they have any suggestions if you can't find that product. I'd focus on treating the concrete as well. Heard it was surprisingly absorbent.
Thanks for all of your quick responses! I'd heard of Nature's Miracle before but couldn't for the life of me remember the name of it. I just disinfected the floor underneath the rugs and hope that that will tackle the smell. If not, maybe the Nature's Miracle will work on that. We have no pet stores down here so I'll have to have dh or my mom pick up some in the city today. I've pretty well decided to toss the rugs. We have a leak low around the floor boards of the room when the monsoons come and the water outside is high so the rugs were never great to begin with. We'll just get remnants to replace them until the leak (the water leak, not the dog leak) is taken care of.
The cement is sealed with cement sealer so hopefully that helped keep the smell out of the concrete itself. As for the dog hide rugs I guess I won't do that. Bella (our dog) is a gorgeous German Shepherd and I think her hide would look better on her. Romeo wouldn't make a rug big enough to wipe your big toe on so that's not practical, lol!
I have to agree with DianeP. Nature's Miracle is the best. It was the only thing that gets rid of the smell by neutralizing it and it takes the stain out. If you had a blue light, they say that is the only way to find out where they peed. I use Nature's Miracle on EVERYTHING from coffee stains to juice to throw up clean up etc. It really is that good.
