View Full Version : Baby bird fell out of the tree, HELP!
I'm a total sucker for any kind of animal. Can we help this poor little thing? It's apparently a baby blackbird and has some pin feathers but not enough to get it back up to the nest. I'm afraid if we don't do something the cats will eat it when the sun goes down.
We don't have access to a pet store so this would have to be done solely on our own, without the help of gadgets, lol. ;)
Dh thinks it will be ready to fly in about a week or so. I can just see myself pureeing worms for the next seven days!!

I once rescued baby birds, and the vet told me to feed them baby cereal out of a syringe. You also need to keep some water in a little dish for him. You have to be careful though not to over feed him or under feed him. I over fed mine and they all died. I was so sad. I kept mine in a small box with a towel shaped like a bird's nest. I hope this helps, and I hope that you have better luck than me. Let me know how it goes.:)
Gosh! How much do the little buggers eat? Dh just fed him two little pill bug type things and about 1/2 of a grub. Ack! I'll keep you posted on his progress. :)

Sorry I can't be of any help with the bird. I once rescued a newborn rabbit from my dogs chops. I called the animal shelter and they have a "division" that will come and pick up the animal, nurse it back to health and release it in the wild/woods. You can give them a donation if you want. I thought it was such a neat program!!

I really don' t know exactly how much they eat. The vet told me that they would chirp and open their mouths when they were hungry, but they did that every time I was around them. LOL!! I guess that is why I overfed them. I would probably feed them about three or four times a day and see how that works. Leep me updated, and if I find out any more, I'll let you know.
Thanks for all of your help.

Sorry to hear about the bird. Two summers ago ds brought home a baby bird the last day of school that had fallen out of a nest. He kept that bird all summer. He fed it soaked dog food and worms dh bought at the bait and tackle store (we kept them in the refrigerator). Ds would take this bird out and toss it in the air and it did learn to fly. He named the bird Lucky. This bird would fly around the yard and even venture to the neighbors, but when ds called his name, the bird would call out to him and fly back to the garage. I had never seen anything like it. One day toward the end of the summer the bird was just eat up with mites. Ds sprayed Lucky with mite spray and the next day the bird was dead. :\

When I was about 12 my cat drug home a bird, and us kids rescued it from her. The only real thing wrong with it was it's leg had been cut... it dried up and had to be amputated. Tweaty absolutely LOVED riding on our two wheeler with us. He would balance himself on a light bracket that was on the front of the bike. Anyway, after having him the whole summer... my sister turned the wheel a little bit too quickly one day... tweaty lost his balance and fell off... and she ran over him. 8o I remember we had a funeral for him and buried him in my mom's garden in an Velveta Cheese Box. I remember it took all of us quite a while for all of us to get over it...

I'm really sorry to hear about that. It seems like no one had any luck with rescuing birds.:(
What terribly sad stories! :bigcry: I fall apart when stuff like this happens.
