I used to pour salt (ouch!) on them thinking it would kill them off! I think I read that somewhere, but I don't remember. Now I buy something over the counter - can't think of the name of it, but it numbs it. If you ask a pharmacist they could give you the name of it. Sorry I'm not much help. Hope it goes away soon for your dh! :\

A high school friend put salt on the sores he got from his braces. His orthodontist suggested that.

Makes sense to me. When I had strep throat I was told by the doctor to gargle with warm salt water. Guess whatever it is that makes it work for a sore throat would make it help for a canker sore.

I wouldn't do this with a child though. They'd maybe swallow more than is good for them.

Canker sores are triggered by poor dental hygiene, allergies to chocolate and other foods, stress and/or fatigue. Also may be a result of abnormal immune response to normal bacteria in the mouth. Deficiencies of iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid may make the sores harder to heal but stress and allergies are usually the cause. Preventative steps: body chemistry should be balanced in minerals, acidity, and alkalinity.
I would recommend a prevention plan such as taking a good multi-vitamin, L-Lysine.
Try to avoid sugar, citrus fruits, and processed or refined foods. Do not eat fish or meat of any kind for 2 weeks while a canker sore is present, because animal protein produces excess acid in the body. Diet should include plenty of salads with onions (onions contain sulfur and have healing properties). Also your diet should include yogurt, kefir milk, cottage cheese and buttermilk.

and I still get them but not as frequently. Honestly the best thing to do is to leave them alone. They do hurt a lot, but I found my bothering them, they get flared up and worse. I find that I usually get a canker when I am run down (because they are part of a virus some times going through your system), or if you bit the inside of your cheek ( a canker may form).

I remember trying all the medications, ointments, gels, swishing with saltwater, mouthwash, etc. but the best thing to do is avoid acidic foods (no tomatos, tomatoe sauces, pop, oranges, grapefruits, etc) and they will heal faster.

I get them all of the time, and I have tried everthing. My doctor did tell me about the L-Lysine, but it doesn't even help now. I think that I have become immune to it. I have also heard that if you open up a myrrah (sp?) capsule and put it on there they will be gone in about two days. I really want to try this, but can not find any myyrah.

Okay, sounds weird, but it works. Have him start taking Tagamet or Pepcid (just the tablets). That will help in a few days. Until they are gone he can rub a little Mylanta on the sore itself to help start it healing that way. Also Chloraseptic throat numbing spray works to take care of the topical pain (probably Ora jel would too, the teething stuff).
