View Full Version : Toenail discoloration

This is kind of yucky, but... a few weeks ago I noticed (overnight)that all the nails on my right foot are yellow with some black on the top edges and sides. I thought it was toenail fungus, so today I visited the doctor. He examined my toes and said it didn't look like a fungal infection to him-- other than the discoloration my nails and surrounding tissue look healthy. He was trying to help me think of anything I may have come in contact with that would have stained my nails, but we couldn't think of anything. I wear black shoes at work, but I wear white socks-- and they are still white when I take them off. I seldom go barefoot, I almost always have socks or slippers on, and I change my socks daily. I also never wear nail polish.

Anyway, anyone ever had this problem? I'm baffled, and so is my doc. Anyone know how I can get rid of this problem? What about bleaching? Any chemical treatments you recommend?

Not too sure if this is what you're talking about but hope this helps...

Sounds like onychomycosis. Onycho(toenail) mycosis(fungus). If it is, it is very dificult to get rid of. Dermatologist is the right person to see.

I still have my permit to practice manicuring and pedicuring, and we always would treat discoloring nails with bleach and water mixture, soak your toes in 1 part bleach to 3 parts water...or place a cotton ball soaked in straight bleach on your toenail.....and under with qtip if you can everynight for a couple of weeks.....I hope this helps....let us know....

Thank you, "DR." RCT, it's funny you should suggest this, and I'm very grateful you did. I asked the doctor if using bleach would damage my nails, and he said, "Yeah, try that! Or just go get your nails done." So, I think I will try it then, and let you know if it works. Thanks!

You know, I think they might be! I forgot the first couple of nights, so I got a late start on the treatment, but when I treated them last night, they did seem to be doing better! I'll keep up with the treatment for another week and let you know then if it's cleared up.

Thanks again for the advice. :)
