We moved into our house about a year ago. We knew that the previous owner had dogs in the house but we didn't notice any pet odor. We did notice that they left behind several of the oil plug in air freshners which should have been our first clue. Well we have two small dogs and they always go to this one bedroom to urinate when they are let inside. My husband says that the previous owner's dogs probably used this room also and that is why our dogs feel like they need to mark their territory. Anyway, my question is, how can I get rid of the scent so my dogs won't continue to urinate on the carpet. I have shampooed the carpet with my hoover carpet cleaner about 100 times, no joke, but the odor is still there. I have tried a product called OdoBan but that hasn't helped either. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Try pouring straight white vinegar on the carpet and letting it soak all the way through overnight and then cleaning it. You will probably have to pull up the carpet and at least replace the pad..sounds like the urine has soaked all the way through. Good luck.

I've heard that Nature's Miracle is truly miraculous! You can get it at PetCo or PetSmart or probably just about any other pet store out there. It removes the odor completely so that animals aren't enticed back to the spot!

Thanks for the quick replies. I think I will try the vinegar first, since I already have in on hand, and if that doesn't work I'll be on my way to Petco.

Pull up the carpet and pad. Clean the floor with lemon juice, water and milk. Seal it with a couple coats or sealer/primer. Put in new carpet and new pad. Replacing the floor would be the best way, but we had luck in our first house just cleaning and sealing the floor.

Thanks for all the good info. We had considered replacing the carpet in that room but I really didn't want to go to the expense and then my little darling puppies turn around and use that same area to releave themselves again. The SPCA may get involved then LOL!

I'm not sure I'm talented enough to remove the carpet and then get it back in place myself. I don't think it would ever be the same.

I'm going to try the above mentioned ideas first. Thanks.

The white vinegar should help a lot to rid the area of the urine odor. Let the vinegar dry thouroughly and then sprinkle heavily with baking soda. Let that sit for several days and vacuum it up. If you put the baking soda on wet vinegar you will get a foamy mess! ;)

After you do that, go to a health food store and buy some Tea Tree oil, put it on a few cottonballs and place them in small glass dishes around the spot. Animals typically can't stand the smell of Tea Tree and will not go near it. If the carpet is already ruined, you might try placing a few drops of it directly onto the carpet. I don't think it would hurt the carpet, but I'd hate to tell you to do something that would stain it worse.
