I am going to make my son a cake in the in the shape of a figure 8. The train tracks will also run in a figure 8 on top of it. I have found candy rocks to use for the gravel underneath the tracks. Does anyone have an idea of what to use for the tracks? Something small and either dark brown or black would work. My thoughts have run to pretzel sticks licorice strings. Any other ideas that might taste better on birthday cake?

Howdy kdyes,
Welcome to idea box. From one fellow Texan to another!! Yea Ha!! You have found a great place. Your cake sounds delicious and fun. The thing that come to mind for me was licorice strings. If time was short I would even use real tracks from a toy set. You know the cheapy ones at the grocery store. I would wash them first and put on top. What ever you choose.. Good luck.

I would probably just use a tube of black icing...like you can get at the store. You can make some cute trees for the middle of the tracks with tipped over (and frosted) ice cream cones.

I just saw a decorated cake using the real thing from a toy track. It looked really cute. The licorice whips would work real well too. If you can't find those I'm sure that a dark color tube of frosting would work out just as well. :) Good luck!!!

Try using wafer cookies, split them in half, for the wood part. Chocolate frosting for the rails.
