Hello,

I am starting to get my kids (2 Ds's) to say their prayers at bed time like I used too.

I know I am let in teaching but they seem interested. Better late than never right.

Anyway looking for some good fairly short prayers that I can teach them.

They are almost 4 and almost 7.

Thanks and God Bless

"Dear God,
Thank you for keeping us healthy and safe. Bless, mommy, daddy, nana, auntie Jill....Amen."

We don't really do set prayers. I want them to pray from their heart not by rote. In the beginning I would model a prayer for them by praying first saying something like "Dear Lord, thank you for this day, thank you for our family, please watch over and protect us and keep up safe and strong". If there was some issue going on..fear of bad dreams, a test coming up, a trip..whatever I would add that. I would then say "pray what's in your heart, whatever you want to say to God". I still pray first and they pray after ..sometimes we switch. Most times dd says what I have said, ds can get rather silly sometimes, but I still let them just let them say the things they want in prayer with only one mandatory "thank you for this day", but lots of times I find out what is really bothering them during prayer time!

We start out with,
"Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
Watch and guard me thru the night
And wake me by the morning light"

From there we say our thanks for the day, bless Mommy, Daddy, etc.

Children's Bedtime Prayers

Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
If I should die before I wake,
I pray the Lord my soul to take.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
And in the morning when I awake,
help me Lord, the path of love to take.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
See me safely through the night,
And wake me with the morning light.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Father, hear and bless
Thy beasts and singing birds
And guard with tenderness
Small things that have no words.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear God whom I can not see,
Smile down from heaven on little me.
Let angels through the darkness spread their Holy wings around my bed,
and keep me safe because I am my Loving Shepherd's little lamb.
Amen

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Father in heaven look down from above,
Bless Mommy and Daddy and those who I love.
May angels watch over my slumber and when,
The morning is breaking, awake me.
Amen

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Five little angles round my bed.
One to the foot and one to the head.
One to sing and one to pray, and one to take my sins away. Amen

We don't have set prayers either. Just speak from the heart. When dd was smaller, we would whisper things when she would get stuck. Now, it embrassess her!! I guess that I should add that we address Heavenly Father and end the prayer in his son's name.

We do pray morning and nightly as a family. What a wonderful power it gives to us.

HOOORRRRRAAAYYYYYY! For you teaching this to your children. It takes awhile to develop a habit. How ever you pray just keep it up!

Thanks for all your help!!!
I will try all ideas, kids are getting tot he point now where they say that they are ready to say their prayers. Instead of me having to say okay now it's time to say prayers, usually I get them to do it after story time.

My oldest Ds has even told me that next summer he would like to go to bible camp with his friend that goes. I think that it is wonderful..I can hardly wait.

Thanks again...

Prayer is talking to God. I don't say set prayers and plan on teaching my children to pray from their heart too. Some things to let your children know: Prayer to God is like to talking to your best friend and Father at the same time. You let Him know what is on your heart. Let him know what you are thankful for and appreciate. You let Him know when you are hurting and need help. You let him know what you are blessed with by Him. God loves us so much. He wants us to worship him in spirit and in truth. He already knows our hearts. He loves to hear us talking to Him and cares for all of our joys and hurts.

I love the advice from the other parents on this topic. God bless you.
