View Full Version : Glutton for punishment??
I hope Im not the only knucklehead doing this... LOL
Why is it that I feel the need to overdo things for my children's birthday? Why can't I just buy cupcakes at wal-mart and pass those off as good enough? NOOOO.... Here I am baking cupcakes inside ice cream cones, rolling the frosting in smashed oreos (I had to hand smash myself) and stick a gummy worm on top. I have exactly 2 hours to pick ds up from pre-school and whip over these cupcakes at dd's school and the blimey things are still in the oven cooking!! LOL The instructions say it tastes the best being made on the same day. UGH
Last year I thought I just had to make a catepillar cupcake concoction for her kindergarten class. Trying to stick licorice into the sides of the cupcakes (legs) almost did me in as I got frosting everywhere.
Does anyone know why normally intelligent people would put themselves through this?? LOL

My dh says that I always have to do things the hard way!!
The cupcakes you are making sound delicious though. I know that your dd will appreciate you - someday!! (At least my 7yr is going through the Thank You stage!)
I hope you make your time deadline.
I don't know, perhaps you are over compensating for some deep fear that you are not really an adequate mother and or somehow failing your childrens needs and by going overboard you are proving to everyone and yourself that you are a good mother????????????????????????
 :newwink:
you're stupid?????????????
 :newwink:
sorry..couldn't resist!!!!!! LOL

Just a quick tip from the "love to hate it" group. If you buy 2 already prepared angel food cakes and stack them. Cut them into the shape of the "barbie" skirt and ice it. Barbie fits perfectly into the whole of the cakes and nobody is the wiser! Wrap barbies legs with cling wrap and she is clean upon removal. Much faster than baking in that bowl.
I CAN'T STOP MYSELF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ROFL!! Inferiority complex and ned for approval definitely does not apply to me!! Actually, I think Im much greater than most of you-especially Ann!! ROFL!
I guess I know Im crafty and it would be plain laziness not to do something for my little ones. Thanks to all who supported me and I'll get back to Ann and Jeff....:D :newwink:
yea yea yea...sure, right, uhuh..whatever!!!!!!!!!!

I think we do it so the day is the best it can be for our precious little ones! What a fun mommy!!! :) I made the cupcakes in cones last year with dks and they are much better on the first day - by day two they are somewhat soggy.

Just wanted to thank those of you that posted to this thread. I actually laughed out loud. My dd came in to see if I was okay. I guess it was a sound she hadn't heard much lately. :thumb:

I have fun planning, decorating etc for parties! I guess I'm kinda weird. I agree with Amy/CO. I love to craft and create and kids are a good reason to do it... And they appreciate it. It makes them feel special.

Love to see people who laugh at themselves. I remember running around like crazy when my dd's were little (the perfect party, gift, the right thing to say so they would be happy with themselves,.......etc.) I definitely had 'practically perfect in every way' aspirations. Somewhere around the time of the separation/divorce and going to work full time, I realized that I wasn't practically perfect and wasn't going to be without a genie on my side. (Sorry if that shatters your image of me! LOL) So I see both sides of this question...and laugh at myself from two angles.
AnnW--This has been a long hard three months. Things keep piling one right after the other (ended relationship, my dd's back injury, the death of my aunt who has been a second mother to me, back to work with a partner who cried for 3 days about being placed in my school, and then the plane crashes and the uncertainty). The attacks are the latest entrant in the queue to drive me to a mental/emotional collapse. Whine, whine, whine....I'm still walking and taking food by mouth (without drug assistance) so I'm sure I'll be fine. At least a few people here have been through more challenges than I have, and I take inspiration from them. Thanks for asking (and I apologize for answering.).
Good grief, if can't come HERE to whine, where can you? Lord knows I do it enough! LOL Sounds like it has been a rough few months. Sorry to hear how it is all piling on!!!! BUT, come here and blow some steam..we are great listeners!!! It's much cheaper than therapy, less fattening than chocolate, easier on the kids and just as addictive as Xanax!!!!

I always went way out too... a lot more than I really wanted to because all of my dd's friends mom's always went WAY WAY out for them... so of course I had to do just as well, if not better for my dd. :) I know... it's terrible how we all have to compete but things like that mean a lot to our kids and I didn't want them to be embarrassed with store bought cup cakes. LOL :)
Diane...
Cathy, Im glad you told us what was wrong! I sensed a strong disatisfaction about life in your e-mails, so please vent here anytime!!! You would be amazed on how much we can handle here. Just remember--what goes down HAS to come up. Your time will come and hopefully you can laugh heartily again!

Amy/CO, I think that you did a really great thing. I think everyone wants their dks birthday to be a special day for them, and they would do almost anything to make it happen.

nah..she's over compensating!!!!! :newwink:
Jeff , child they have whole cookbooks devoted to just this sort of thing.
Amy/Co I think it's wonderful of you to go all out. As a teacher I see way to many Wal-Mart cookies, and cakes and parents that don't show up for parties. My kids go wild when a parent has gone out of their way to make something a little special. Thanks to all the mom's who can still do that. And no offense to the ones who can't (hey, I'm a working mom too).
Cathy We all have low times in our lives (I'm in one right now myself) but we come back out on the other side a better person because of it. {{{hugs}}} Hang in there and keep talking, if not to us, then to someone.
All you over-compensating, over achieving, aprroval seeking, crafty moms out there I need your services next Saturday. The kindergarten classes are sponsoring the cake walk at our Fall carnival and the home ec department could not help out with cakes this year. The response sheets we sent out for baked goods did not come back. Looks like we won't have much to walk for this year. Think y'all could whip one up for us. ..... Seriously what you do is great. Wish I had the talent. I have to start baking today things that I can freeze till next week. It may taste good, but won't be too crafty.

kat, Thanks!
On your baking- if it's got sugar and chocolate, it's a work of art in my book.

Cathy, sorry to hear things have been so hard for you! If you don't mind I'll put you in my prayers. Hope things look up soon!
As for the cupcake thing--I find myself getting all kinds of ideas like that. It's twice as bad now that I'm teaching preschool. It seems so boring to just have cheese and crackers for snack!!
I have found that my preschool kids do get excited when parents bring in home baked goods. There are some kids whose moms and dads never bake anything. (That's not a put-down just an observation).
I've found that I just need to do what I can for my kids. They still know I love them even if I can't provide the best treats in the room. A few weeks ago dd #1 wanted me to make Jello jigglers for snack at Kindergarten. As much as I wanted to, I just didn't have the time. That was the week I had 2 or 3 kids sick with the flu. I just hated the thought of making something and possibly spreading the flu to the kids at school. We resorted to 3 boxes of Teddy Grahams and a promise that we'd make jello next time. :)

Cheese and crackers can be a fun snack - use tiny cookie cutters (I've got a pumpkin and bat that I use at Halloween) to cut shapes out of cheese slices.
kat
I'd get on the phone and call those parents! Teachers should NOT be baking for the cake walk at all - those are THEIR kids!

Amy, all I know is that today I came home overloaded with stuff for ds's birthday in three weeks from party city. Then when I had a so called free minute, I spent it 'drawing out' what I was going to do for the cake, chocolate river and all. (Willy Wonka theme).
So I cannot help you on why we do these things, temporary insanity maybe?
Cathy, I hope things start to go better for you soon. Vent away any time, that is what we are here for.

Arianna, do you mean for this particular party?
I got two shiny bristol boards in the shape of balloons and am going to make them into giant lollipops. I am going to get some more bristol board, trace and cut them out to make more. I was searching this weekend for brown paper streamers but had no luck. I was going to make a big chocolate waterfall in the door way going into the living room that the kids would have to walk through. But I couldn't get the brown streamers or crepe paper. Not sure what else to do in it's place. I am going to make a pinata (maybe, if time permits) in the shape of a gummy bear. It should all work out well, ds is excited. I have ordered the movie so we will watch it instead of the kids running through the house and trying to do a ton of games half of them don't want to play. LOL The invitations are going to be Crunch chocolate bars with a 'Golden ticket' inside with all the info. I got the gold foil for that yesterday. Not sure what else I'm going to do yet. It's fun to plan, but also a lot of work for one day. Oh well, they only have one birthday a year and they get excited. Once I see the movie again, I'm sure I will come up with more ideas such as making golden eggs out of paper mache. lol
