I got offered a few jobs, but decided to just become a home day care provider instead. It was a difficult decision to make because I really didn't want to put my own children in before and after school care. After much discussion and soul searching- I have decided this will be the best choice for my family at this time. I won't be starting for at least a month because I'm going to get licensed. I'm actually excited and really looking forward to it.
Now I just need to think of a name for tax purposes. Have any ideas?

Congratulations JAK! I think what your doing is a wonderful idea! I'd check and see what help you can get from Not for Profit groups in your area. One of my clients is a Not for Profit that focuses on providing free training for daycares. I'm not sure if there is something like that in your area, but it is worth a shot.

Not sure on a name... leeme think about it.

Great Jen. Sometimes just making the decision is the hardest part.

Way to go Jen. I am glad that you will be doing something that you like to do. Let me see, a name... Jen's Jolly Daycare. I'll have to get back to you on that one. I am still trying to name Ryleigh's :tinysmile :tinysmile :tinysmile

Sounds exciting, Jen!! You seem like a really nice person and those little ones will be lucky to be in your care while away from their mommies and daddies. :) Best of luck!

Congratulations Jen! What all do you have to go through to get licensed? How many kids are you going to have?

Yeah for you making the decision. I agree that that would be the hard part. There are few here with that job. I am sure that you will get answers to your questions and concerns!

Good Luck and Congrads.....

Good for you, Jen. I haven't thought of any names but will post them if I can come up with any.
I honestly couldn't be a day care provider. I love kids but I need to be able to break away when I can. lol
Do you know how many kids you will be able to have?

I actually have to go through quite a bit to get licensed. I have to got through 25 hours of training for one week and then have to do 24 hours of training a year after that. Since I live on a military base, several different base agencies have to go through our medical records, housing records and things like that to make sure we are not bad, crazy and that we don't or haven't abused children. In my house I have to be inspected by the fire department, the medical department and the family child care coordinator has to came and make sure that I am following all of their rules and regulations. I will also have unannounced monthly inspections from all of them as well. I have to get health certificates for my pets and probably quite a few other things I haven't mentioned. It will be worth it to me though. If I were to put my 2 dks in before and after school care I would be spending at the least $425 a month. My training class starts next week and I won't get my license until the middle of December as they have to do background checks as well.

Until I decided to become licensed I didn't realize all that I had to do in order to get it done either... LOL It IS a lot of work but it's well worth it. Good luck with everything!!!

I actually knew what I was getting into as I was licensed in 1994 when we lived on base in Germany. A few things have changed, but for the most part it seems to be the same.

I know that you had a lot of children at one time. What is your limit in MN? I know that each state is different. In military housing it is the same no matter what base you are at. You can only care for 6 children in your home (including your own children under the age of 8) and only 2 of them can be under 2 years old.

Hopefully it will work out for me. I'm thinking about taking 2 babies and that's it, but we'll see how things work out!

I didn't realize that you had been a licensed provider before... so you DO know what you're getting into. LOL :)

The most children I've had by myself have been 12... including my own. WITH a helper I've had 14... My helper was my dd, but she wasn't really a big help... just there. I've always been very picky/particular about who I've taken, and any new ones came only with a two week trial just in case they weren't working out, then I always had an OUT. :) Right now I've only got 6 kids... with NO infants or schoolers. After all of these years of doing day care this is probably the BEST day care I've ever had... really terrefic kids AND parents. :) I've been very lucky. Good luck, and let us know how it's going.
