View Full Version : How clean is your house?
Ok, with these  sick kids, and me just getting over the 72 hour thing .....it got me to thinking...how clean is my house really? ?( I am going shopping with my SIL tommorrow at a store where she gets a 10 percent off discount on everything (she's a senior....don't tell) so I am getting a new mop.....new cleaning supplies...since mine are old and yucky......thinking about how dirty my kitchen floor must be....I vaccuum everyday because of the dog hair....and I sweep in the kitchen everyday...but only mop once a week.....well, how clean could it be really.....I can't even imagine what he is bringing in on his paws.....all that is out in the grass....eeewwh anyhow....my kids are on thier hands and knees more now at 4 and 6, then when they were crawling... how clean is your house....I am not getting all worked up about it...its just real, how often do you clean your kitchen floor, and how often do you wipe everything down with lysol? just curious?
Oooh, this is like truth or consequences, LOL! Can I take the consequences, please! :D No, really, I don't think it's too bad. It varies so much when I do things, I'm trying to get onto a good routine. FlyLady is helping tremendously! Out of a 10, I think I'd give my house an 8 1/2 which is a vast improvement over what it was when we first got married! I still dream of the day that I can have a "10" house!
Can we eat off the floor? NO Do we WANT to eat off the floor? NO!
I clean the kitchen every day, counters with lysol, swifter the floor, pick up all the clutter and stuff, make my bed (kids do their own) but that's about it for daily stuff. I run the vacumn every couple of days. The rest of the cleaning gets done once a week.
so do you all think the mopping the floor everyday would be a bit much? its just that out door enters right into the kitchen...we never use the actual front door.....I feel like Mrs. Clean and I am soooooo NOT.....lol

My house is always neat, but not necessarily clean. I have joined flylady too, but find that I am deleted most of the reminders. I try to mop at least once a week. We don't have pets (Opps hamster!) that come in doors. DD is not messy. Just the three of us so we are not that messy. I think it would make a difference if it was messier than I would clean more often. Now, I just tend to put it off cause it doesn't look so bad.
Ps. I have decided not to buy black soled shoes any more. My mules leave a scuff marks all over my kitchen (the kitchen does get sweep everyday). ARGGGHHHH!!

Renee..do you feel like it needs to? If it's dirty, then mop, if you are mopping cause you think that's what you SHOULD be doing, then don't. :)

LOL... I don't even OWN a mop. :) I fill my bucket up with floor cleaner, along with a good sized wash rag... get down on my hands and knee's and I scrub the floor that way. With all of the kids that I have running through my house I swear... it get's scrubbed two, maybe three times a day. LOL Maybe it's a little excessive but... I don't think I'd need to do it as often as I do if I didn't do what I do for a living. LOL My sister only washes her's once or twice a week so... I guess it really depends upon how many kids and pets you have running through your kitchen each and every day. :)

I'm improving but I'd still prefer advance warning when companies coming! Everything gets done when it needs it and when I have the time. Just based on what others have said both in this post and other similar posts, I suspect I am ineffective. It sounds like I spend more time cleaning and get less results. I think my family is composed of slobs. Seriously. I spend hours a day just cleaning. If I take one day off the house turns into a disaster zone.
Like you I have replaced most of my cleaning supplies. And I'm trying out new things. Trying to be smarter not work harder. I've started testing out the cleaners at Home Depot. I figure they must be industrial strength yet are cheaper. I'm also getting more cleaners. I always kept everything in one spot. Now I keep a bottle of whatever cleaner near where it's needed. For example - We have a huge bathroom mirror that the kids always slop toothpaste on. Instead of having just the windex with my other cleaners the bathroom now has a spot for windex, toilet bowl cleaner, and tub cleaner (soft scrub with bleach). Plus the cloths. If the stuff is within reach I find myself grabbing it while verifying the kids brush their teeth (another problem in our house!). Sort of like doing two things at one time.
Try putting a rug at the door. A large one if necessary and clean that daily. That may help stop dirt from tracking in.
BTW - I have mixed feelings on dirt and getting sick. I've read studies that say both. I can tell you that my kids are rarely ever sick and I know my houses twin has been on COPS before! On the other hand my SIL had a friend living with them. Part of her *rent* was the housework. I got the impression it was everything except cooking. Once my BIL told his 10 yr old to straighten up a her dresser drawer and she said that was Jay's job. There house was always spotless and they are constantly sick. Of course I think they are hypocondriacts anyways!
Oh Ann and Lynda, that's what I needed to hear....I guess with the kids getting sick and me too, I just started thinking it was our house...but your right...it is flu and cold season...and my house really is clean...the floor could stand it a few times a week and I am telling dh that he either BATH his dog or take him to the groomer....he weighs over 90 pounds now....YIKES.....thanks again all.....was starting to think I would be cleaning for the rest of my life...LOL...NOT...
My house is usually pretty clean (or so I thought till I had to move everything for the painters  ). I have a place for everything, and everything in its place. I vacuum and mop twice a week. I disinfect the kitchen counters anytime I work with meat, other than that it's just a wipe with the dishcloth when dishes are done. Dh does dishes, but isn't real good about cleaning counters so I'm right behind him. My house isn't the cover of house beautiful; there are throws, magazines, newspapers and doggie toys lying around. I do like to go barefoot (I'm a southern girl) so I do like clean floors.
When I had a house keeper I kept all the cleaning supplies in a central location. Now I buy extras and keep one of everything in each room where it's needed. That way when I have an extra five minutes, I can quickly clean the mirrors or sinks.
As far as a dirty house and sick kids - they need to be exposed to a few germs.

I pick up on a daily basis - I love waking up to no clutter. :) I wipe down the counters daily, vaccuum, sweep, and do laundry as needed throughout the week, and do all other cleaning once a week.

Looks like I might be the resident slob of the board. My house is always a mess! This past weekend we did a lot of cleaning and throwing stuff out.
My kitchen floor gets mopped when I get around to doing it (which isn't real often. :() It is an older floor with a lot of grooves and indentions so even when it is clean, it doesn't look it.
I try to vaccuum at least once a week. My biggest problem is I will clean up one room, move to the next and then come back to see that the kids have messed up the first room. UGH!! :(
As for dirt and sickness--My mom's house wasn't spotless when we were growing up and none of us had allergies or were sick very often. Once it was just my little sisters left at home, my mom constantly cleaned everything and had things spotless. They have terrible problems with allergies. They were telling me they heard something about too clean a house can cause that. Don't know that there's any truth to that--just something we've heard.
